Kanpur, July 16 (NationPress) Kuldeep Yadav, India's leading left-arm wrist spinner, has been sidelined for the first three matches of the ongoing five-Test series in England. As the fourth Test at Old Trafford approaches, his childhood coach, Kapil Dev Pandey, argues that it is crucial for the spinner to receive his rightful chance.
In a candid discussion with IANS, Pandey expressed his unwavering confidence in Kuldeep’s form and fitness, emphasizing that the spinner is poised to make an impact if given the opportunity. With India currently trailing 1-2 in the series—following a defeat at Lord's, a dramatic win at Edgbaston, and another loss at Headingley—the pressure is mounting on the visitors to enhance their bowling attack, and Pandey believes Kuldeep could be the key.
“Kuldeep’s absence doesn’t seem to carry much weight at the moment, as Team India has been performing decently. In the third Test, many anticipated his inclusion, but the fast bowlers stepped up and delivered,” he noted.
However, Pandey pointed out that Kuldeep is enjoying one of the best phases of his career. “He was exceptional during the ODI World Cup and showcased remarkable skills throughout the tournament. Not utilizing him effectively has been detrimental to India. In recent games, it’s the batsmen who have faltered, not the bowlers,” he remarked.
Highlighting the necessity for role clarity and management accountability, Pandey further discussed the unrealistic expectations often placed upon bowlers.
“It’s unrealistic to expect performers like Kuldeep or even Bumrah to score centuries,” he stated.
Despite playing only 13 Tests since his debut in March 2017, Kuldeep has consistently delivered when selected, yet his Test career has been inconsistent. His coach believes the 29-year-old remains prepared and focused.
Old Trafford, host of the fourth Test commencing July 23, has historically favored spinners, particularly as the match unfolds. With India finding it challenging to dismiss England at crucial junctures, Kuldeep’s inclusion could introduce much-needed variety and control during the middle overs.
Pandey commented on India’s team composition thus far in the series, stating that while the fast bowlers have performed admirably, failing to utilize Kuldeep’s talents has been a significant oversight.
“I recently advised Kuldeep to maintain his fitness and be ready to contribute whenever the opportunity arises. Ultimately, the final decision rests with the coach and captain. Nonetheless, it’s undeniable that Kuldeep is among the finest and most experienced spinners in the country,” he asserted.
“His morale is high, but like anyone, he must be wondering when his chance will come. He can be a pivotal asset for Team India in Manchester. I’ve spoken to him; he remains focused,” Pandey added.
As India aims to recover in the fourth Test, the call for Kuldeep’s inclusion grows louder, and perhaps Manchester will finally herald his long-awaited return to the red-ball format.
