New Delhi, Aug 18 (NationPress) Kapil Bainsla hailing from Palwal, Haryana, has clinched India's inaugural gold at the 16th Asian Shooting Championship (Rifle/Pistol/Shotgun) held in Shymkent, Kazakhstan, scoring 243.0 in the 10m air pistol men junior final. He outperformed Uzbekistan’s Ilkhombek Obidjonov, who finished 0.6 points behind.
Jonathan Gavin Antony, another Indian shooter, secured the bronze with a score of 220.7, after concluding his performance following the 22nd shot of the 24-shot final.
In the qualification rounds, Kapil scored 579 placing fourth, while Jonathan finished second with 582. Mukesh Nelavali closely trailed Jonathan, finishing third, which allowed three Indians to reach the final. Korean shooter Kim Dooyeon led the qualification with a score of 582, having at least six shots in the inner 10-ring more than Jonathan.
In the final, Ilkhombek started strong, with Kapil pursuing him closely. After the 15th shot, Kapil took the lead for the first time but Ilkhombek regained it after the 20th shot. As the final shots approached, Ilkhombek held a full point lead over Kapil.
However, Kapil closed with an impressive 10.8 and 10.6, while Ilkhombek faltered, shooting a 9.4 for his final shot, thus gifting Kapil the title.
