Adelaide, Jan 15 (NationPress) The defending champion Madison Keys faced an unexpected exit from the Adelaide International on Thursday, falling in the quarter-finals to Canada's emerging talent Victoria Mboko in a hard-fought three-set match.
World No. 17 Mboko, aged 19, triumphed over the ninth-ranked Keys with a scoreline of 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 in a match that lasted one hour and 53 minutes, marking her second win against a top-10 player.
The eighth seed Mboko started strong by breaking Keys early in the opening set but struggled to keep up with the American’s powerful serves in the second. In the final set, Mboko showcased her serving prowess, winning 75% of her first serve points and capitalizing on the only break chance she had.
"I know she won this tournament last year and, of course, the Australian Open. I was aware that this match required a fierce effort, so I'm thrilled to have succeeded," Mboko stated on court post-match, as reported by Xinhua.
Keys, who claimed the Adelaide International title in 2025 before securing her first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open, is set to compete in Melbourne on January 18 to defend her title.
Mboko will face Australia’s Kimberly Birrell in the semifinal on Friday, after Birrell made a remarkable comeback from a set down to defeat Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian 5-7, 6-1, 7-5 in a three-hour battle.
Birrell was ahead 5-2 in the first set and had five set points, yet could not capitalize as Cristian rallied to win five consecutive games to claim the set. In a turnaround, Birrell dominated the second set, winning the first five games.
With the score tied at 5-5 in the third set, Birrell secured a crucial break of serve for a 6-5 lead and converted her second match point with a stunning backhand winner down the line, advancing to her first career semifinal in a WTA 500 tournament.
Mboko’s rapid ascent has been a highlight of the season; she was honored as the WTA Newcomer of the Year after winning the National Bank Open title in Montreal, rising from world number 333 at the beginning of the year to number 18 in the rankings.
