Basseterre, Aug 20 (NationPress) The Saint Lucia Kings, the current champions, triumphed over the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots by a nail-biting three runs at Warner Park, marking their inaugural victory in the Caribbean Premier League.
After losing the toss and being asked to bat, the Kings managed to score 200 runs in their innings, fueled by explosive half-centuries from Johnson Charles and Roston Chase, along with a rapid 46 runs off just 23 balls from Tim David. Charles led the charge with a commendable 52 runs off 28 balls, setting a formidable target for the Patriots.
A remarkable debut performance from breakout player Navin Bidaisee kept the Patriots in the game as they pursued the Kings' total of 200/8.
As the match reached its climax, the Patriots found themselves needing four runs off the final delivery, bowled by David Wiese. Although Wiese consistently delivered yorkers throughout the over, he faltered slightly on the last ball, offering a hittable delivery.
Bidaisee attempted to secure the win with a shot towards the boundary, but Tim David executed an incredible catch, sealing a three-run victory for the Kings and leaving the Patriots devastated.
For the Kings, captain David Wiese and Khary Pierre each claimed two wickets.
Chase was awarded the title of Player of the Match for his outstanding performance, scoring 61 runs off 38 balls and contributing with the ball as well, taking 2 wickets for 27 runs, including key dismissals of Rilee Rossouw and Patriots skipper Jason Holder.
“It was quite nerve-racking. We made it harder than it needed to be. I felt we could have secured the win more decisively, but I’m still thankful for the two points,” Chase remarked after the match.
The defeat leaves the Patriots with only one win in four matches, having lost three in a row. Meanwhile, the Kings sit atop the CPL table based on net run rate, despite their opening match against the Falcons being abandoned due to rain.
Earlier, the Kings' first match was washed out owing to heavy rain on Monday. They will face the Trinbago Knight Riders next, early on Sunday.
