Gulmarg (J&K), March 8 (NationPress) As the second leg of the Khelo India Winter Games (KIWG) 2025 kicks off on Sunday at the stunning Kongdoori slopes, the Indian Army is set to challenge the Union Territory of Ladakh for supremacy, seeking to reclaim their overall title in this esteemed competition.

In the first leg, Ladakh emerged victorious, securing a total of 7 medals, including four gold, while Tamil Nadu followed with five medals, three of which were gold. Although Maharashtra had the highest medal count at 10, their two golds placed them in third.

More than 350 athletes from 11 states, two Union Territories, and various central forces, including the Army, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), will compete in four disciplines: Alpine Skiing, Nordic Skiing, Ski Mountaineering, and Snowboarding. The Winter Games are resuming after being delayed due to lack of snowfall in February.

The renowned winter sports destination of Gulmarg is now blanketed in snow, creating an exciting atmosphere for athletes eager to perform.

Wasim Bhat, an Alpine Skiing competitor from Jammu & Kashmir, expressed that the thrilling sport has instilled in him a sense of fearlessness.

“The Khelo India Winter Games are shining a light on the top athletes from Jammu and Kashmir, as well as from across the nation. The mountains of Kashmir have taught me to be adaptable and fearless. I am thrilled to showcase my abilities in the Khelo India Winter Games commencing this Sunday and aim to make J&K proud,” Wasim shared with SAI Media.

Capt. Amit Kapoor, a Ski Mountaineering athlete from Delhi, acknowledged the exceptional mental resilience displayed by winter sports athletes, which makes the Khelo India Winter Games truly exceptional.

“The Khelo India Winter Games have evolved significantly since their inception in 2020. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, the event has brought athletes to Jammu and Kashmir, recognized as India's winter sports capital, hosting all previous Winter Games. Ski mountaineering demands endurance, skill, and mental strength. While the slopes of Gulmarg present challenges, the strength and resilience of the competitors in the Khelo India Winter Games is remarkable.

National Games gold medallist Vakar Ahmad Lone, a snowboarding athlete from J&K, emphasized that the Winter Games provide local talents a platform to display their skills on an international scale.

“The Khelo India Winter Games are highlighting local talent while also offering opportunities for athletes from elsewhere to engage in their sport on the enchanting powdery snow of Gulmarg. For me, snowboarding transcends sport; it’s a connection with nature and a way to challenge my limits. I am eager to compete in the Khelo India Winter Games and demonstrate what Kashmiri athletes can achieve,” Vakar stated.
