IPL 2026: KKR Hopes for Pathirana's Swift Return, Affirms Watson
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, March 28 (NationPress) The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are currently waiting for clearance from Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) to have pacer Matheesha Pathirana join their roster. Assistant coach Shane Watson expressed optimism that Pathirana would arrive ‘sooner rather than later.’
Pathirana was acquired for a remarkable Rs 18 crore during the auction in Abu Dhabi last year but has been sidelined due to a left calf injury that truncated his participation in the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup. Due to the pending clearance from SLC, he is set to miss KKR's inaugural match against the Mumbai Indians, scheduled for Sunday at Wankhede Stadium.
“With Pathirana, it’s clearly a matter of patience right now. We are following the guidance of Sri Lanka Cricket and are doing everything possible to bring him here at the earliest. Our interests align with those of Sri Lankan cricket—we want Pathirana here, and we want him healthy,” Watson stated.
“We would never want to rush him back. The last thing we wish for is for him to play in the first game prematurely and risk further injury. He was a top priority for us during the auction,” he added.
“When at his peak, Pathirana showcases incredible skills that significantly challenge batters. We’re keeping our fingers crossed… hoping for a swift return,” Watson affirmed during the pre-match press conference on Saturday.
Watson also highlighted the wealth of T20 talent emerging from Indian cricket through the IPL, saying, "It's remarkable to witness the caliber of cricketers coming from India. This poses a challenge for the rest of the world, as India could field multiple teams and still compete against the best T20 sides globally.”
Additionally, he hinted at KKR's top-order player Angkrish Raghuvanshi being considered as a potential wicketkeeping option, given that only New Zealand's Tim Seifert and Finn Allen are the specialist glovesmen.
“Yes, Raghuvanshi has been diligently improving his wicketkeeping skills over the last five or six months. We have Dishant Yagnik, one of the best fielding and wicketkeeping coaches globally, working closely with him. His skills are definitely on par with what IPL bowlers and KKR bowlers will present,” Watson concluded.
