Kolkata Knight Riders bowling coach Tim Southee on Saturday said the franchise will evaluate pitch and weather conditions before finalising Matheesha Pathirana's inclusion in the playing XI for Sunday's IPL 2026 clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. The Sri Lankan pacer, who recently obtained a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Sri Lankan cricket board, has impressed during training sessions, strengthening KKR's bowling options ahead of the contest.

Pathirana's training impact and selection criteria

"Yes, he's arrived. He's been around the group for a little bit now. We'll look at conditions and make a decision on the side that we think is best for tomorrow's game. He's been bowling well at training, and it's great to have him a part of the side," Southee said during the pre-match press conference on Saturday. The bowling coach acknowledged that while Pathirana's head-to-head record against SRH batter Heinrich Klaasen presents a tactical advantage, team balance and overseas player quota constraints will ultimately drive the selection call.

Balancing squad composition and conditions

"Yes, you consider a number of things for selection. Obviously, the balance of a side, the makeup of your team. In the IPL, your makeup with the overseas has to change when you make those changes. So, those decisions will be taken into account along with the conditions that we're looking to be faced with tomorrow," Southee added. The comment underscores the complexity of IPL team construction, where foreign player slots are limited and every inclusion requires strategic trade-offs elsewhere in the XI.

Mid-tournament break and momentum

KKR enter Sunday's fixture having capitalised on the mid-tournament break to regroup while preserving the momentum from back-to-back victories before the pause. "A little bit of time off in the middle of the tournament has been great. It's nice to have a bit of a break, refresh, and go again. We had a little bit of momentum built before that break with back-to-back wins. So, hopefully we can carry on that form that we had in the games in the lead-up to the little break," Southee explained. However, KKR currently occupy the eighth position in the points table with only two wins from eight matches, making the SRH clash a must-win encounter.

Afternoon contest and bowling challenge

The afternoon fixture presents distinct conditions, with the absence of evening dew favouring the bowling side. "I think an afternoon game is slightly different. Obviously, there's no dew. It's an exciting challenge for our bowlers to come up against a side that's in form. We know how dangerous this side has been, particularly their top three and then the likes of Klaasen and the rest through the middle," Southee noted. SRH have emerged as one of the tournament's in-form batting units, with a potent top order backed by middle-order firepower.

KKR's bowling confidence heading into SRH clash

Despite SRH's batting prowess, Southee expressed confidence in his bowling unit's capacity to execute under pressure. "I just see the game as a great opportunity for our bowlers. I think we bowled reasonably well to them in the first fixture. Anytime you come up against dangerous batters, it's always a great challenge for bowlers. I'm sure here we know it's a pretty good wicket. As a bowling group, they're excited for a big opportunity tomorrow," he said. KKR are banking on Pathirana's addition and the bowling group's experience to arrest a slump that has left them seventh from bottom in the standings.
