IPL 2026: Anil Kumble Lauds Chahal's Timely Strikes Against GT
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 1 (NationPress) Anil Kumble, the renowned Indian leg-spinner, commended Yuzvendra Chahal’s strategic acumen that led to Punjab Kings defeating Gujarat Titans by three wickets in IPL 2026. He noted that Chahal’s dismissal of Shubman Gill and Jos Buttler was timely, giving the team a strong start to their campaign.
Chahal’s impressive figures of 2-28, along with Vijaykumar Vyshak’s 3-34, restricted GT to a total of 162/8, which PBKS successfully chased down with five balls remaining. “Yuzvendra Chahal is exceptionally clever. He adapts his line, length, and speed effectively. He didn’t overcomplicate his approach when setting up the batters,” Kumble remarked.
“He consistently bowled slightly wider and was astute in his execution. He assessed the conditions and targeted the larger side of the ground. If someone were to take him on in that direction, they needed to make solid contact—which they failed to do,” he added.
“Chahal’s wickets of Shubman Gill and Jos Buttler were crucial for Punjab Kings, especially since Gill appeared poised to build on a strong start. Unfortunately for GT, their typical strategy of having one batter anchor the innings for 15 overs did not yield the expected advantage,” Kumble stated on JioHotstar.
Additionally, Kumble questioned the timing of pacer Prasidh Krishna’s introduction in the 13th over, suggesting that the Purple Cap holder from last season should have bowled earlier.
“It was surprising that Gujarat Titans chose to bring in Prasidh Krishna, the Purple Cap holder, only in the 13th over. The initial breakthrough was somewhat fortunate. Shreyas Iyer had been struck on the hand moments earlier, likely leading to a lapse in focus. It was a half-volley that he attempted to hit directly to the fielder,” Kumble explained.
“He delivered an excellent delivery to dismiss Shashank Singh; that short length troubled all batters throughout the match, and Prasidh identified that quickly. However, he was introduced too late in the innings, as it is rare for a bowler to complete all four overs during the last eight overs of the innings,” he added.
“Holding him back like that resulted in Prasidh Krishna conceding 14 runs in his final over. For the benefit of GT, he should have bowled at least one over between the 6th and 10th overs, as he was better suited to the pitch conditions,” Kumble concluded.
