New Delhi, Aug 30 (NationPress) Former Indian Premier League (IPL) commissioner Lalit Modi has addressed the backlash from S. Sreesanth’s wife, Bhuvneshwari, after she criticized him and Michael Clarke for unveiling a never-before-seen video of the notorious 2008 IPL Slap-gate episode involving her husband and Harbhajan Singh.
The uproar began when Modi and Clarke recounted past IPL incidents on a podcast, during which Modi showcased an unseen footage capturing Harbhajan delivering a backhanded slap to Sreesanth during post-match handshakes following a match between the Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab (currently known as Punjab Kings). Harbhajan received an 11-match suspension due to this incident.
“I am perplexed as to why she (Bhuvneshwari) is upset. I was posed a question, and I provided an honest response. I cannot change that. I am known for being truthful. Sree was indeed the victim, which is what I articulated. No one had previously inquired about this, so when Clarke made a jest, I replied,” Modi remarked to IANS.
Modi elaborated on the video to Clarke, describing how his security camera captured the moment after the broadcasters had turned theirs off. The clip reveals Harbhajan summoning Sreesanth during post-match handshakes before administering the slap. Both players have since reconciled, appearing together in commentary panels and advertisements, with Harbhajan publicly apologizing for the incident numerous times.
Earlier, Bhuvneshwari expressed her disapproval on social media, labeling the release as “disgusting, heartless, and inhumane.” She stated: “Shame on you @lalitkmodi and @michaelclarkeofficial. You are lacking humanity by resurrecting a situation from 2008 merely for your own gain in publicity and views. Both @sreesanthnair36 and Harbhajan have long since moved on and are fathers now, yet you choose to reopen old wounds. This is utterly appalling, heartless, and inhumane.”
Sreesanth also reshared her posts on Instagram. Bhuvneshwari further emphasized the toll on their family: “@sreesanthnair36 has rebuilt his life with dignity and grace after enduring various hardships. As his wife and as the mother of his children, it is profoundly hurtful for our family to witness this resurfacing after 18 long years. Families are compelled to relive trauma that was buried long ago, solely for your quest for views. This not only impacts the players but also deeply affects their innocent children who are now confronted with questions and shame for no wrongdoing of their own.”
She urged Modi and Clarke to reflect on the ramifications of their actions: “Fear God. Your actions are inflicting pain on families and innocent children for your own profit.”
