Laxman backs Sooryavanshi, 15, to break all international records after Zimbabwe T20I series
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
India's interim head coach VVS Laxman has heaped praise on teenage opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, calling his batting in the third T20I against Zimbabwe in Harare 'very mature' and expressing full confidence that the 15-year-old will 'break all the records' at the international level. Sooryavanshi was named Player of the Series after India completed a 3-0 whitewash of Zimbabwe.
A Match-Winning Knock on a Difficult Surface
Sooryavanshi top-scored with a 49-ball 81 as India posted 192/5 on a slow, stopping pitch at the Harare Sports Club. It was a knock that drew particular admiration from Laxman, who noted that Zimbabwe had a specific plan to contain the youngster — one that Sooryavanshi read and countered effectively.
'What you saw was a mature innings because it was a difficult wicket. The ball was stopping and coming, the wicket was slow. I thought the Zimbabweans bowled well and had a plan for him. He countered that plan and it was a very, very mature knock from Vaibhav,' Laxman said at the conclusion of the series.
IPL Crucible That Shaped His Temperament
Laxman pointed to Sooryavanshi's debut season with the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) as the crucible that forged his match temperament. 'At the age of 14 or 15, when you're playing an IPL match, either you can be overawed by the big occasion or absorb and embrace the pressure. I think he's taken the second option where he embraced the pressure,' Laxman said, adding that the series result came as 'no surprise' given what he had seen in the IPL.
Disappointment at Missing a Hundred — and the Team's Response
Sooryavanshi was visibly disappointed at falling short of his maiden international century in the final T20I. Laxman revealed the team management moved quickly to provide perspective. 'He was disappointed not to get a hundred. But we mentioned to him that it's not going to be the first time or the last time he'll get an opportunity to score a hundred. He's got a long career,' Laxman said.
The coach added: 'I'm sure that he will just progress and break all the records at the international level. He's got all the potential and the ability to do that.'
Two and a Half Years in the Making
Laxman, who also heads the BCCI's Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru, revealed that Sooryavanshi was first identified by the CoE roughly two and a half years ago, ahead of the 2024 Under-19 World Cup, when he was a standout scorer for India B in a quadrangular series in Vijayawada. He went on to become the highest run-getter in the Under-19 World Cup before dominating the IPL within four to five months of that tournament.
'We know him in and out. It's not only the player, but we also know the person. When you know the person, you understand what works for him and how we prepare him so that he's in the best frame of mind when he goes into a match,' Laxman said.
Fitness the One Area Still Being Developed
While Laxman said technical adjustments have been minimal, he flagged overall fitness as a work in progress for the teenager. 'One of the areas which we want him to get better at is his overall fitness. We have to also remember that he's just 15 years old,' he said. Notably, Sooryavanshi sustained an injury during the final T20I but insisted on staying on the field until the team physio intervened — a detail Laxman cited as evidence of the youngster's commitment. With a 3-0 series win banked, India's management will now look to manage Sooryavanshi's workload carefully as his international career gathers pace.
