Little Andaman, March 31 (NationPress) – The Surfing Federation of India has officially unveiled the Little Andaman Pro 2026 – the National Surf & SUP Championship, which will mark the start of India's surfing season from April 9 to 12, 2026. This inaugural event is set to launch an exciting year for Indian surfing, coinciding with the nation’s first-ever participation at the Asian Games 2026 in Japan later this year.

This four-day surfing festival will feature the country's elite surfers and stand-up paddlers competing for top honors at the breathtaking Butler Bay Beach in the Andaman Islands, bringing competitive surfing to one of India’s most pristine and under-explored coastal locations for the first time.

Organized by the Surfing Federation of India and supported by Andaman and Nicobar Tourism, this championship will showcase top surfers from across the nation in the Senior Division for both Surfing and Stand-Up Paddle (SUP) categories, with registrations already in progress.

This event holds significant importance as it comes during a pivotal year for Indian surfing. The country achieved its first-ever Asian Games quota at the 2024 Asian Surfing Championships and continued to build on that success in the 2025 edition at Mahabalipuram, ultimately securing a total of four slots—two for men and two for women—at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.

“This is a transformative moment for Indian surfing. As we approach our debut at the Asian Games later this year, launching our national season at a world-class venue like Little Andaman underscores our commitment to promoting the sport across our coast-rich nation. We are dedicated to providing our talented athletes with ample competitive opportunities across various conditions, which is crucial for their development on the international stage,” said Arun Vasu, President of the Surfing Federation of India.

Vasu further emphasized, “The advancement of Indian surfers on the global stage has been remarkably positive. From earning our first Asian Games quotas to securing medals at continental championships, we are witnessing the outcomes of persistent grassroots development and organized competition.”

The Little Andaman Pro 2026 will take place at Butler Bay, known as one of India’s most promising surf spots. Unlike many mainland beach breaks, the reef break at Butler Bay produces long, clear waves that permit surfers to perform intricate maneuvers and extended rides, making it ideal for high-performance competitions.

For many Indian surfers accustomed to beach breaks, competing in reef conditions offers a valuable chance to enhance their technical skills and broaden their competitive experience. Events like these are essential in strengthening the national talent pipeline and preparing athletes for international challenges.

Beyond the competitive aspect, the championship aims to promote the Andaman Islands as a future center for surfing and ocean sports in India. With its crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral reefs, and consistent swell patterns, Little Andaman is increasingly capturing the interest of surfers and adventure tourism stakeholders alike. In recent years, Indian surfers have progressively improved their presence on the international stage. The national team achieved its first-ever team silver at the Asian Surfing Championships and has had numerous successful runs, including semifinal and quarter-final finishes, showcasing the country's growing competitiveness against established Asian surfing nations.

The Surfing Federation of India has also announced an expanded 2026 annual competition calendar for Surf and Stand-Up Paddle (SUP), featuring more events throughout the country than ever before. The national circuit will include multiple stops over the year, starting with early-season competitions like the Mumbai SUP Championship in January, followed by key national events from April onwards, including stops in Little Andaman and traditional surf hubs like Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, as well as additional legs planned for mid-year and post-monsoon periods to ensure consistent competitive exposure for athletes.

Moreover, 2026 will also witness the introduction of the Longboarding Division in the national competition circuit, providing opportunities for athletes specializing in classic surfing styles and traditional wave-riding techniques.
