Wellington, March 31 (NationPress) Sune Luus has praised the emerging talents of South Africa's cricket team, viewing their thrilling win over New Zealand Women in the first ODI of their three-match series as a positive indication for the sport's future. This match, part of the ICC Women’s Championship, saw the Proteas, who were runners-up in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025, secure a dramatic two-wicket victory in Christchurch, largely credited to the fearless performance of 20-year-old Kayla Reyneke. The young player remained not out at 42, clinching the win with a stunning six off the final ball.

Luus reflected on the impressive composure displayed by these young players, expressing her admiration for their confidence and ability to handle pressure. “It’s fantastic to see such promising signs for the future of South African cricket. Witnessing these players flourish is simply amazing,” Luus stated ahead of the second ODI.

She added, “When we were younger, I don’t recall having that level of confidence or being able to hit sixes so freely. It’s incredible to observe the growth of the women’s game and how Kayla embraced responsibility.”

South Africa's triumph was also bolstered by an outstanding bowling performance from Ayabonga Khaka, who achieved a career-best six wickets to dismantle the White Ferns' batting lineup. “She took wickets at critical moments. As a senior bowler, she consistently takes on challenges and rises to the occasion. I'm thrilled for her; reaching a six-wicket haul is a significant milestone. I hope she continues to take more wickets in the upcoming games,” Luus shared.

During the chase, Luus herself played a critical role, forming a vital 123-run partnership with Annerie Dercksen that steadied the innings and kept South Africa in contention. “Batting with Derckie is always an adventure. She brings a fun energy, and when she’s on form, the runs flow effortlessly. We maintained a steady pace, and it was essential to remain calm and extend our partnership as far as possible,” Luus noted.

She emphasized the importance of batting longer, stating, “The longer you stay at the crease, the better your chances of winning. I’m glad we managed to push the innings deep. For the upcoming match, we hope someone from the top four can anchor the innings until the 40th over and help us achieve our goals.”
