Madurai, Nov 22 (NationPress) In anticipation of the upcoming FIH Men’s Junior Hockey World Cup 2025, the Government of Tamil Nadu has officially opened the Madurai International Hockey Stadium, a state-of-the-art facility located at the Race Course Complex this past Saturday.
Engineered to align with stringent Olympic standards and featuring cutting-edge amenities, this stadium represents a significant advancement for the growth of hockey in southern India.
The inauguration was officiated by Tamil Nadu's Deputy Chief Minister, Udhayanidhi Stalin, alongside key figures such as P. Moorthy, the Minister for Commercial Taxes, Registration & Stamp Law, and Palanivel Thiaga Rajan, the Minister for Information Technology & Digital Services, along with local MLAs.
During his address, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin remarked, “The Madurai International Hockey Stadium showcases Tamil Nadu’s ambition to become a premier global sports hub. This venue marks Madurai’s entry onto the international sports scene. Our aspirations go beyond this tournament; we aim to position Madurai as the foremost center for hockey excellence in southern India and as a driver of comprehensive development.”
The President of Hockey India, Dilip Tirkey, expressed his pride in this new infrastructure addition. “It’s a proud milestone for Indian hockey to see another world-class stadium incorporated into our national framework. On behalf of Hockey India, I sincerely thank the Tamil Nadu government for their relentless efforts in establishing this facility promptly and ensuring top-notch infrastructure for the Junior World Cup.
Such facilities will motivate aspiring athletes in Madurai and throughout Tamil Nadu to engage with the sport. The Madurai International Hockey Stadium will be instrumental in broadening the reach of hockey and nurturing the next generation of champions,” he stated.
Hockey India Secretary General Bhola Nath Singh noted, “The support provided by the Tamil Nadu Government has been exceptional. Hosting Junior World Cup matches here will significantly influence the region’s sports culture.”
Hosting the FIH Men’s Junior Hockey World Cup 2025 is a pivotal event in Madurai’s sporting narrative. The city will host three pools featuring 24 competing nations, with matches scheduled from November 28 to December 10, 2025. A total of 72 matches will occur across Chennai and Madurai throughout the tournament.
