Guwahati, Nov 23 (NationPress) India's bowling coach Morne Morkel expressed that the team had exerted considerable effort on the first day of the second Test against South Africa at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium and is optimistic that the bowlers can secure early wickets on day two.
India's focused bowling attack managed to restrict South Africa to 247/6 on the opening day of a match they must win to equalize the two-match series at 1-1.
“Our aim is to capture those wickets as quickly as possible, starting with positive energy and body language. My primary focus, as we're aiming for victory, is to approach it hour by hour, session by session, while controlling what we can,” Morkel stated to broadcasters before the second day's play.
On the previous day's bowling performance, Morkel commented, “Yesterday felt like a classic day of Test cricket. It was a good pitch, and breaking those partnerships required hard work. I believe we did exceptionally well in managing the scoring rate during the second session. Securing those wickets in the third session and reducing them to six down was a commendable effort.”
When asked about discussions with bowlers during breaks in Test matches, Morkel elaborated, “It really depends on the situation. Typically, during breaks, we review pitch maps and engage in brief discussions to provide options against the batters. However, these players are seasoned and know how to execute their roles effectively.”
“As a bowling unit, we've significantly evolved this year—grasping situations and executing partnerships is crucial in India. If we can apply pressure from both ends, we enhance our chances. The team consistently gives their all, and it's vital to remain focused on the task at hand and play the situation effectively,” he added.
The former South African fast bowler concluded by stating that he’s gaining invaluable insights from the current group of Indian spinners regarding spin bowling. “I'm acquiring a wealth of knowledge from them. Thus far, it's been a wonderful opportunity to collaborate with these world-class spinners.”
“The sooner we can keep the stumps in play and adjust our pace while posing challenges, the more opportunities we create on these surfaces. Delivering the ball accurately with energy is key. They are masters in their field, and I'm learning immensely from them.”
