New Delhi, Feb 8 (NationPress) England's fast bowler Saqib Mahmood is optimistic that the visiting team can still clinch the ODI series victory against India if they succeed in winning their final two matches in Cuttack and Ahmedabad.

Previously, England faced a setback in the T20I series, losing 1-4 to India, and they started the ODI series with a defeat in Nagpur, losing by four wickets.

“Despite the tour not yielding the best results, it’s crucial for us as a team to maintain our beliefs and stay united – we hope to see some positive outcomes,” he stated.

“Competing in India is among the toughest challenges in cricket. If we can deliver a strong performance in these last two matches, there’s a chance we could emerge victorious in the ODI series,” Mahmood remarked.

“Winning here is quite rare. Our focus is now on moving forward; dwelling on past disappointments can negatively affect our game, which is something we want to avoid,” Mahmood shared with The Independent on Saturday.

He also pointed out that fast bowler Jofra Archer has been unlucky in securing wickets, as India’s batsmen have effectively capitalized on his pace.

“Statistics in this format, particularly T20, can be misleading. Some bowlers may perform poorly yet still take wickets, while someone like Jofra, who bowls at high speeds and swings the ball, deserves recognition. His bowling has been commendable – he’s a game-changer and an essential asset for our team,” he remarked.

Concluding his thoughts, Mahmood stated that competing on Indian pitches will benefit England in their preparations for the Champions Trophy, where they will participate in Group B matches in Pakistan.

“Playing against this caliber of opposition and on these types of wickets will enhance my skills, ensuring that I am well-prepared for the competition in Pakistan. The Champions Trophy is approaching quickly, comprising a maximum of five matches, with the first three being critical for qualification into the knockout stages,” he explained.

“This series presents a challenging opportunity, allowing us time to reflect before entering the Champions Trophy, where we need to be ready from the very first ball,” he concluded.
