Manchester, April 9 (NationPress): Manchester United received a significant boost as Kobbie Mainoo trained at Carrington on Wednesday. The 19-year-old, who has not featured for the Red Devils since the match against Leicester on February 7, appeared fit and refreshed ahead of their journey to France for the Europa League clash with Lyon.
Mainoo has been sidelined due to a muscle injury and will be eager to regain consistent playing time after seeing limited action under new manager Ruben Amorim. The promising midfielder made his way into the senior squad of United last season and also represented England in the finals of the 2024 European Championship, where they were defeated by Spain.
It is uncertain whether Mainoo will feature against Lyon at the Groupama Stadium, but the head coach provided insights following the 1-1 draw with Manchester City over the weekend.
"Kobbie Mainoo is training with us; we want to be cautious with our players, but he might be included in our squad," Amorim stated in a discussion with the club's official website.
Matthijs de Ligt was absent from the session, having also missed the game against Manchester City at Old Trafford.
It is yet to be clarified how long the Netherlands international will be out, but Ruben may give a further update during his pre-match press briefing on Wednesday, ahead of the first leg of the Europa League quarterfinals, as reported by the club's official site.
Toby Collyer also did not participate in the session after sustaining a recent injury.
Luke Shaw took part again as the Three Lions international continues to progress towards full fitness. Shaw has only made three appearances for United this season but may push for inclusion in Thursday night's match against the Ligue 1 side. Several academy players were also present, including Harry Amass, Jayden Kamason, Godwill Kukonki, and Jack Moorhouse, who are all training with the main group.
