New Delhi, April 14 (NationPress) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has sent a letter to Debashish Dutta, the general secretary of Mohun Bagan Super Giants, applauding the Kolkata-based team for achieving the ISL double.
In an exhilarating match at their home ground, Mohun Bagan Super Giants secured their second Indian Super League (ISL) Cup by overcoming Bengaluru FC 2-1 on Saturday.
This triumph signifies a major achievement for the club, making them only the second team in ISL history to seize both the League Shield and the ISL Cup in a single season, following the footsteps of Mumbai City FC in the 2020-21 season.
“Having already captured the ISL League Shield, Mohun Bagan Club has now lifted the Indian Super League (ISL) Cup. This is indeed a remarkable accomplishment at the national level and I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the entire squad and management for this significant success,” Mamata stated in a letter shared by MBSG on X.
“This is a moment of great pride for all of us, as a club from Bengal has once again showcased exceptional talent on the national platform of Indian football.
“Our Government is committed to promoting sports, enhancing related infrastructure, and nurturing talent across various disciplines. This achievement underscores our dedication and highlights the passion of the players along with the steadfast support of the loyal Mohun Bagan fans.
“I offer my sincere congratulations to the players, support staff, members, management, and supporters of the Mohun Bagan club, as well as to the numerous football enthusiasts in Bengal during this moment of glory, and wish this century-old institution continued success in the future,” it further stated.
The match commenced with Bengaluru FC taking control, especially in the first half, where they dominated possession. Their persistent pressure bore fruit shortly after halftime when Mohun Bagan center-back Alberto Rodríguez inadvertently directed the ball into his own net, giving BFC the lead.
However, the momentum shifted after strategic substitutions from MBSG. The new players and tactical changes revitalized the team. Just 23 minutes after conceding, MBSG was awarded a penalty, which Jason Cummings expertly converted to equalize at 1-1, reigniting their aspirations of clinching the ISL Cup.
As the game moved into stoppage time, it was MBSG’s top goal-scorer Jamie Maclaren, who has been pivotal throughout the season, providing the crucial moment. With a composed finish under pressure, Maclaren scored the winner, ensuring a thrilling 2-1 comeback and further entrenching MBSG’s legacy in ISL history.
