New Delhi, June 26 (NationPress) Former Australian wicketkeeper Ian Healy has voiced his concerns regarding Cameron Green batting in the number three position for the Test team, suggesting that Nathan McSweeney would be a better fit, while Green could be utilized in a different batting slot.
In the initial innings of the first Test against the West Indies in Bridgetown, Barbados, Australia was dismissed for 180 runs, with Green contributing a mere three runs. Earlier, Green had managed only seven runs at an average of 2.33 at number three during Australia’s loss to South Africa in the World Test Championship Final at Lord’s earlier this month.
“I find it a little perplexing that Pat Cummins claims Cameron Green is a long-term No. 3. Just four months ago, it was stated that Nathan McSweeney is a definitive choice for the No. 3 spot moving forward, possibly even as captain,” Healy remarked on SEN Radio.
“Let’s hope there hasn’t been a change, and he’s merely overlooked ‘Sweens’. He should take the No. 3 role, while Cam Green can enjoy a different position in the lineup,” Healy added.
During the match in Barbados, Green gave a catch to first slip after playing at a delivery from Shamar Joseph. Healy also touched on the technical flaws impacting Green’s performance. “Cam Green is swinging a bit too hard at the ball, which is resulting in catches at slips,” Healy noted.
“For example, Zak Crawley, the tall England opener, made adjustments mid-game to address this issue. He struggled like Green in the first innings but managed to play straighter in the second innings, scoring 65 in one of the most memorable run chases against India at Headingley, where they chased down 371 runs.
“Cam Green must ensure his bat face is directed straight at the ball,” Healy emphasized.
Fortunately for Australia, Travis Head salvaged the innings with a score of 59, helping the team reach a total of 180. In response, the West Indies ended the day at 57/4, trailing Australia by 123 runs.
