Chennai, Jan 2 (NationPress) The Tamil Nadu Dragons are set to face the Hyderabad Toofans in the inaugural match of the Men's Hockey India League (HIL) at the renowned Mayor Radhakrishnan Hockey Stadium in Chennai this Saturday.
This marks the second season of the revitalized Men's HIL, which will take place in various cities, commencing in Chennai, then moving to Ranchi, and culminating in Bhubaneswar with the grand finale on January 26.
Hockey India aims to bring the excitement of top-notch hockey to as many cities as possible, allowing more fans to experience thrilling matches featuring elite players from around the world.
The league's kickoff sees the Accord Tamil Nadu Dragons challenging the Hyderabad Toofans. Last season, the Toofans narrowly missed the championship, finishing as runners-up with a close score of 3-4 against the title-winning Shrachi Bengal Tigers. The Tamil Nadu Dragons, who narrowly lost the playoff for third place (2-3) against the JSW Soorma Hockey Club, are eager to start this season strong.
This year's format includes a single round-robin stage, allowing the top four teams to advance to the knockout rounds, a change from the previous season's group format. In playoff stages, the top two teams will compete in Qualifier 1, with the winner moving to the final and the loser heading to Qualifier 2. The second team in Qualifier 2 will be determined by the winner of Eliminator 1, which pits the teams ranked 3rd and 4th against each other.
The league features eight teams, including defending champions Shrachi Bengal Tigers, Hyderabad Toofans, JSW Soorma Hockey Club, SG Pipers, Accord Tamil Nadu Dragons, Vedanta Kalinga Lancers, Ranchi Royals, and HIL GC, which has replaced the UP Rudras.
Key Indian players to watch include Harmanpreet Singh, captain of JSW Soorma Hockey Club, Hardik Singh from HIL GC, Manpreet Singh representing Ranchi Royals, and Rupinder Pal Singh, making his return with the SG Pipers. The Junior World Cup Bronze medalists will also be a highlight, featuring Rohit and Dilraj Singh for SG Pipers, Amir Ali and Manmeet for the Ranchi Royals, Sunil PR for Vedanta Kalinga Lancers, and Prince Deep Singh for the Accord Tamil Nadu Dragons.
Notable international players include Tom Boon with the Ranchi Royals, Christopher Ruhr representing Sharchi Bengal Tigers, Vincent Vanasch and Victor Wegnez with Soorma, Arthur Van Doren and Alexander Hendrickx with Vedanta Kalinga Lancers, and Sam Ward from HIL GC.
