Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 3 (NationPress) Following appeals from several prominent football players to FIFA, the sport's governing body, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) has revealed that the schedule for the upcoming season of the Indian Super League (ISL) will be disclosed next week.
The AIFF executives convened an emergency meeting on Saturday to review and acknowledge the report presented by the AIFF-ISL Coordination Committee. This committee was formed on December 20, 2025, in the aftermath of the AIFF Executive Committee meeting and the subsequent AIFF Annual General Meeting,” stated the AIFF in a press release on Saturday.
“The Coordination Committee was tasked with submitting its report to the AIFF Secretariat by January 2, 2026, which was successfully fulfilled. The report was officially recognized by the AIFF officials, who recommended that the league be managed by the All India Football Federation,” it added.
“In line with this, the AIFF will oversee the league, and the kick-off date will be revealed next week,” the statement confirmed.
The league had been in a state of uncertainty since negotiations between Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL) and AIFF stalled, leading to disagreements over renewing the Master Rights Agreement (MRA) necessary for FSDL to operate the Indian Super League. FSDL hesitated to commence the 2025-26 season on schedule due to the MRA's expiration on December 8, 2025, leaving the league's renewal status unclear.
On Thursday, the AIFF received confirmations from nearly all ISL members indicating their willingness to participate in the forthcoming 2025-26 season; however, participation hinges on satisfactory financial and governance guarantees from the AIFF.
“It’s January, and we should be on your screens for competitive football in the Indian Super League,” Gurpreet stated in a video alongside other players. “Instead, we are compelled to voice our concerns driven by fear and desperation,” Jhingan added. “Players, staff, owners, and fans deserve transparency, protection, and, most importantly, a future,” former India captain Sunil Chhetri asserted in the players' appeal to FIFA.
“Our plea is vital. The Indian football authorities are failing to meet their responsibilities. We face a risk of permanent paralysis. This is our final attempt to salvage what we can. We urge FIFA to intervene and assist in preserving Indian football. We hope this message reaches the authorities in Zurich. This is not a political call; it arises from necessity. It may sound dramatic, but we are grappling with a humanitarian, sporting, and economic crisis. We need urgent support to continue playing football,” other players expressed in their statement.
