Mumbai, July 11 (NationPress) The state of Indian football, already suffering from disappointing results and a declining ranking of the senior men's team, plunged further into chaos on Friday. This turmoil arose when the organizers of the Indian Super League announced a pause on the 2025-26 edition due to delays in renewing their contract with the All India Football Federation (AIFF).
Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL), a subsidiary of IMG Reliance responsible for organizing the Indian Super League (ISL), has officially put the forthcoming 2025-26 season on hold amid stalled negotiations over extending its agreement with AIFF.
In a letter addressed to participating clubs, a copy of which has been obtained by IANS, FSDL stated that it had no choice but to halt ISL 2025-26 as it is "unable to effectively plan, organize, or commercialize the 2025-26 ISL season" due to the lack of a finalized agreement regarding the Master Rights Agreement (MRA), which is set to expire on December 8, 2025.
"In light of these circumstances, we regret to inform you that we cannot move forward with the 2025-26 ISL season and have opted to place it on hold until more clarity is provided regarding the contractual structure beyond the current MRA period. This decision has not been made lightly," the letter stated.
FSDL noted that the MRA with AIFF will conclude "approximately one-third into a typical ISL season, which runs from September to April" because the national federation has yet to deliver a definitive answer regarding the proposal for renewing the MRA.
"While discussions regarding the potential renewal of the MRA began months ago, they remain unresolved at this time. Without a confirmed contractual framework beyond December, we are unable to effectively plan, organize, or commercialize the 2025-26 ISL season," FSDL elaborated in its correspondence.
FSDL stated it is writing to the clubs to keep them updated on the evolving situation.
"This communication is being issued by FSDL in a good faith effort for transparency, allowing all clubs to plan for any potential contingencies. We assure you that FSDL is closely monitoring developments and will continue to keep clubs informed in a timely and transparent manner," the letter emphasized.
In December 2010, IMG Reliance, a joint venture between IMG Worldwide and Reliance Industries, acquired all commercial rights to football in India from AIFF for a period of 15 years.
According to the agreement, AIFF granted IMG Reliance the rights to leverage the commercial value of the sport to enhance, popularize, and promote football across India, from grassroots initiatives to professional levels.
