Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 16 (NationPress) The Kerala Sports Minister, V. Abdurahiman, confirmed on Saturday that the Argentina national football team, spearheaded by captain Lionel Messi, is set to arrive in Kerala this November for an exciting football match.
Recently, the Congress leadership, including state party president Sunny Joseph, criticized Abdurahiman, urging him to clarify the situation following the buzz surrounding Messi's visit.
In response, the Minister explained that although Messi's travels to other Indian states are part of a personal journey, they are not officially affiliated with the Argentina Football Association (AFA).
“As of now, there has been no indication from the Argentina team about skipping Kerala. In fact, we have received confirmation of their arrival in November, and we are already coordinating necessary security measures for the team,” he stated.
Abdurahiman also addressed concerns raised after the initial sponsor withdrew from the event.
“The AFA has reassured us that the November visit will proceed with a new sponsor. My recent trip to Spain was not solely to engage with AFA officials but also to discuss the new stadium project in Thiruvananthapuram with representatives from Spain's Sports Council,” he noted.
Earlier this week, reports indicated that Messi would arrive in Kolkata on the 12th, proceed to Ahmedabad on the 13th, participate in activities in Mumbai on the 14th, and wrap up his journey in Delhi on the 15th, where a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi is anticipated.
Despite contrasting announcements causing some uncertainty, Kerala officials remain optimistic about Messi and the Argentina team visiting the state in November, emphasizing the government's proactive collaboration with the AFA.
The Congress party in Kerala has been vocal in its criticism of the state government after AFA representatives accused it of violating contractual terms related to bringing Messi and the Argentina national team to the state.
AFA's Head of Marketing, Leandro Peterson, mentioned that the deal fell through due to the Kerala government's failure to meet its obligations, yet hopes have been rekindled with Abdurahiman affirming that the event will take place.
