Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 16 (NationPress) The Kerala Sports Minister, V. Abdurahiman, reaffirmed on Saturday that the Argentina football team, featuring their illustrious captain Lionel Messi, is set to visit Kerala in November for an exciting football match.
Last week, members of the Congress party, including state president Sunny Joseph, expressed skepticism and urged Abdurahiman to clarify the situation regarding Messi's potential visit.
Responding to these concerns on Saturday, the Minister emphasized that Messi’s travels to other Indian states are part of a personal trip and not officially linked to the Argentina Football Association (AFA).
“As of now, the Argentina team has not indicated any plans to forgo Kerala. In fact, we have received confirmation of their arrival in November, with necessary security arrangements already requested,” stated the Minister.
Abdurahiman also dispelled any rumors stemming from the withdrawal of the initial sponsor.
“The AFA has reassured us that the November visit will proceed with a new sponsor. My visit to Spain was not solely to engage with AFA officials, but to also discuss the new stadium project in Thiruvananthapuram with Spain’s Sports Council,” he elaborated.
Earlier this week, reports indicated that Messi would arrive in Kolkata on the 12th, move to Ahmedabad on the 13th, participate in events in Mumbai on the 14th, and finish with a visit to Delhi on the 15th, where a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi is anticipated.
Despite conflicting announcements, officials in Kerala remain optimistic that Messi and the Argentina squad will indeed visit the state in November, highlighting the government's proactive coordination with the AFA.
The Congress party has mounted a fierce criticism of the state government after the AFA accused it of failing to uphold a contract to secure Messi and the Argentina national team's arrival.
Leandro Peterson, AFA’s Head of Marketing, claimed that the deal fell through due to the Kerala government's inability to meet its contractual commitments. Nonetheless, hopes have been renewed following Abdurahiman’s confirmation that the event is still on track.
