Kochi, Oct 27 (NationPress) The controversy surrounding Lionel Messi’s anticipated visit to Kerala has escalated, as Congress MP Hibi Eden claims that the event is tied to a questionable business arrangement involving significant financial misconduct.
Eden called for an extensive investigation into the financial dealings associated with the Kaloor International Stadium renovation project.
He voiced doubts about the involvement of sponsor Anto Augustine, who had previously asserted rights over the stadium, alleging that illegal tree felling occurred under the guise of renovations.
“The same government that once declared it would distance itself from tainted individuals has now made those implicated in the Muttil tree-felling case event sponsors,” stated the Ernakulam MP.
He urged the government to clarify the discussions and decisions regarding Messi and the Argentina team’s scheduled visit.
Mohammed Shias, president of the Ernakulam District Congress Committee, also made serious allegations, claiming that the renovation project is part of a “calculated attempt to seize control of the stadium.”
He called for the government to publicly disclose the contract between the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) and the sponsor.
“It seems a conspiracy may have occurred, and a thorough investigation is warranted. The GCDA chairman should step down,” he asserted.
The state government has yet to respond to inquiries concerning the sponsorship deal or the execution of the project.
With the confirmation that Messi and the Argentina team will not be visiting Kochi this year, new questions have arisen about the motivations behind the rushed renovations.
Critics are questioning why the stadium underwent partial demolition without following proper procedures, when restoration will take place, and how the sponsor was selected.
This incident, initially touted as a major sporting achievement for Kerala, has transformed into a political maelstrom, with the Opposition accusing the government of leveraging the Messi brand as a facade for dubious financial activities.
Similar to Eden, BJP State President Rajeev Chandrasekhar alleged on Monday that a series of controversies are being intentionally created to obscure the alleged fraud associated with the proposed visit of football legend Messi and the Argentina football team, along with the Sabarimala gold scam.
Chandrasekhar remarked that certain individuals with criminal histories have infiltrated the media sector and are attempting to sway public perception. “Some criminals have entered the media field, and such forces will be dealt with decisively,” he stated.
