Kochi, Oct 29 (NationPress) The Congress party has ramped up its criticism of the Kerala Sports Department and the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) concerning the renovation of Kaloor Stadium, which was initiated in light of the anticipated arrival of football icon Lionel Messi.
On Monday, Ernakulam MP Hibi Eden raised concerns about potential irregularities in the project, questioning whether the renovations, supposedly for Messi's visit, were supported by a legitimate contract.
"We support the renovation, but it must be conducted transparently," he stated, insisting on clarity regarding the funding sources and their legality.
Eden also alleged that the sponsorship funds were funneled through a private chit fund operator and requested information on the criteria used for handing over the stadium.
He further criticized Kerala Sports Minister V. Abdurahiman for prioritizing business interests over sports.
Contractors involved with GCDA projects contended that the reported ₹70-crore investment was merely a public relations stunt.
They claimed that repair work was happening without a formal tender process, despite the existence of the GCDA's own engineering and planning divisions, with the Sports Kerala Foundation (SKF) officially in charge of the project.
The contractors called for the public release of spending and estimation details.
The All India Youth Federation (AIYF) demanded an immediate halt to construction, citing the absence of any scheduled international matches.
They also urged the GCDA and the state government to elucidate their agreement with private sponsors.
In response, CPI-M Ernakulam district secretary S. Satheesh dismissed the Opposition's accusation of "privatization," clarifying that the stadium was assigned to a state-managed body, not a private firm.
GCDA chairman K. Chandran Pillai asserted that all procedures were adhered to.
Protests from opposition groups have intensified, with the Bharath Dharma Jana Sena, Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, and Youth Congress organizing demonstrations.
Allegations of illegal tree cutting around the stadium have exacerbated the controversy, even as renovation efforts persist despite Messi's canceled visit.
About two dozen Youth Congress members, donned in traditional Argentinian football jerseys and wielding footballs, entered the GCDA office to protest by playing soccer, declaring the entire situation a scam and demanding immediate action from the state government.
