Mumbai, Jan 11 (NationPress) Former captain of the Indian women's cricket team, Mithali Raj, expressed her views on the pivotal role played by Harmanpreet Kaur and Nat Sciver-Brunt in guiding the Mumbai Indians (MI) to a victory against the Delhi Capitals (DC) following their earlier loss to the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the exciting WPL opener.
MI achieved a remarkable 50-run victory over DC, supported by a stellar batting performance alongside a disciplined bowling effort led by Amelia Kerr (3-24) and Nicola Carey (3-37).
The captain, Harmanpreet, earned the Player of the Match title for her explosive innings of 74 not out off 32 balls, while Sciver-Brunt contributed a solid 70 off 46 balls, propelling MI to a formidable total of 195/4.
“From the moment she arrived at the crease, she was timing the ball beautifully. She quickly found her rhythm and carried on from where she left off on Friday with those 30-odd runs; her shots were executed flawlessly,” remarked Mithali about Harmanpreet's performance on JioStar.
“The way she swung the bat, gauging the length expertly, and targeted her shots was impressive. The big over from Minnu Mani was crucial, as both she and Nat Sciver-Brunt gained momentum there. It marked a turning point in the match, allowing Harmanpreet to play her shots freely,” she continued.
Mithali further commented on Sciver-Brunt's importance in the Mumbai lineup, stating, “Although she may have a few quieter games, you can always expect a significant innings from her. Her intent and approach upon entering the match indicated her desire to support the team.
“While she didn’t perform in the last game, MI recognized that her performance was critical for their success. The team's fortunes heavily rely on her; when she excels, it elevates the performances of everyone around her.”
While defending 195, MI's bowlers mirrored their batting strength with a disciplined performance. The pressure mounted early as Sciver-Brunt struck first, dismissing Lizelle Lee for 10 runs. Nicola Carey then took two wickets, sending Shafali Verma (8) and Laura Wolvaardt (9) back to the pavilion. Soon, captain Jemimah Rodrigues followed suit, leaving DC in dire straits at 35/4 by the end of the powerplay.
Despite losing partners, Chinelle Henry kept hope alive for DC, achieving her second WPL fifty. Her innings concluded at 56 off 33 balls when Amelia Kerr sealed DC's fate, concluding their innings at 145 and securing a decisive 50-run victory for MI, marking their first win of the 2026 season.
Reflecting on the contrasting performances of the teams, Mithali noted, “Two seasoned players stepped up in the middle order for MI. In a chase like this, a solid powerplay is vital. You need Shafali Verma and Lizelle Lee to provide a good start, followed by players like Laura Wolvaardt and Jemimah Rodrigues.
“The top five struggled to even score a hundred runs, which will be a source of disappointment for the Delhi Capitals.”
Former New Zealand cricketer Katey Martin elaborated on the improvements made by MI's bowlers against DC, stating, “They adjusted their plans effectively, bowling straighter and at better lengths. Amelia Kerr proved vital in the middle overs, thanks to the platform laid by her teammates. I found Shabnim Ismail’s execution impressive, even if she was slightly unlucky not to dismiss Lizelle Lee earlier with her bouncer tactic.
“Nicola Carey bowled flawlessly against those two types of players, aiming to beat them on the inside edge. The planning from MI’s bowlers was clear, and their execution was precise compared to their game against RCB last Friday, particularly with key moments like Kamalini’s catch to dismiss Jemimah Rodrigues. We witnessed several dropped catches last Friday that could have turned the match, so it was great to see those quick improvements and a positive change in attitude,” she concluded.
