Vadodara, Feb 16 (NationPress) Leg-spinner Priya Mishra dismantled the UP Warriorz batting order, enabling the Gujarat Giants to limit their score to 143/9 within the allotted 20 overs during the third match of WPL 2025 at the Kotambi Stadium on Sunday.
Choosing to bowl first, the Giants made sure the Warriorz could not compile a significant total. Although Deepti Sharma, in her debut match as UP captain, along with keeper Uma Chetry attempted to stabilize the innings with a partnership of 51 runs for the third wicket, Priya’s remarkable triple strike during the middle overs thwarted their efforts.
With Alana King and Saima Thakor scoring 26 runs in the final two overs, the Warriorz managed to surpass the 140-mark. While the Giants feel confident about chasing this down, the Warriorz have Deepti, Alana, and the top-ranked Sophie Ecclestone to defend this total, now the lowest of the current WPL season.
The Warriorz commenced their innings brightly, with Kiran Navgire hitting three boundaries within the first two overs. However, the Giants swiftly retaliated as Deandra Dottin bowled a quick delivery that trapped Kiran lbw, followed by captain Ashleigh Gardner who bowled out Vrinda Dinesh cheaply.
Deepti showcased excellent batting skills, using sweeps, heaves, and punches to score boundaries, while Uma was adept at finding the gaps with her slog sweeps and on-the-ground slams. Yet, Deandra made a comeback in the 10th over, having Uma pull a short ball to mid-on.
From that moment on, it was all about Priya as she trapped Tahlia McGrath lbw with a googly for a duck, followed by bowing Grace Harris with the same delivery. She concluded her middle-over spell by delivering a slower ball outside off-stump that Deepti attempted to slog, but ended up getting caught by a diving Ashleigh at mid-off.
After Ashleigh and Kashvee Gautam dismissed Shweta Sehrawat and Sophie Ecclestone, respectively, Alana exhibited her batting talents by hitting Deandra for a six and a four.
In the last over, Saima took charge with her edged reverse sweeps and slams, hitting three fours off Ashleigh, the final one occurring after the ball slipped through Laura Wolvaardt’s hands at long-on. Though Saima was run out on the last ball, she and Alana ensured the Warriorz set a commendable total.
Brief Scores: UP Warriorz 143/9 in 20 overs (Deepti Sharma 39, Uma Chetry 24; Priya Mishra 3-25, Deandra Dottin 2-34) against Gujarat Giants
