Vadodara, Feb 19 (NationPress) Former India captain Mithali Raj lauded the Mumbai Indians for their remarkable performance in a convincing five-wicket victory against Gujarat Giants during the Women’s Premier League (WPL) match, describing it as a thorough and commanding triumph for the champions of the inaugural season.
A collective bowling effort enabled Mumbai Indians to secure their first win with a solid five-wicket victory over Gujarat Giants in Vadodara on Tuesday.
The bowling trio of Hayley Matthews (3-16), Amelia Kerr (2-22), and Natalie Sciver-Brunt (2-26) restricted Gujarat to just 121 runs, making it easier for Mumbai to chase down the target. Leading the chase was Nat Sciver-Brunt, who not only excelled with the ball but also scored a half-century, sealing the game with 23 balls to spare.
“Mumbai Indians started strong by winning the toss and maintained their dominance by regularly taking critical wickets against Gujarat Giants. They bowled in the right areas, ensuring key dismissals, especially of the overseas players, limiting Gujarat to only 121 runs. The chase was handled efficiently, concluding in just over 16 overs. All in all, it was a thorough and commanding victory for Mumbai Indians,” Mithali remarked on JioHotstar.
MI captain Harmanpreet Kaur won the toss and opted to field. This decision quickly proved beneficial as Sciver-Brunt initiated the PowerPlay collapse by dismissing the significant wicket of Beth Mooney. Just before the PowerPlay concluded, she also removed the in-form Ashleigh Gardner for just 10 runs, delivering a significant blow to GG.
Commending Nat Sciver-Brunt’s performance, Mithali stated, “Nat Sciver-Brunt is having a remarkable season, both with bat and ball. This was her second fifty of the season, and she showcased her signature shots with great confidence. You can sense her top form the moment she steps onto the field.”
“With the ball, she made an early impact, sharing new-ball duties with Shabnim Ismail and achieving a crucial breakthrough by getting rid of Beth Mooney. That was a pivotal moment in the match, as Mooney has been a steady performer for Gujarat Giants.”
Highlighting MI’s collaborative effort in their win, Mithali added, “While Hayley Matthews didn’t score heavily today, she provided a solid start. Amelia Kerr also began decently. As the tournament continues, by the third or fourth game, we can anticipate Mumbai Indians' batting unit to truly find their rhythm. However, as a captain, it’s reassuring to see your in-form batter consistently contributing runs, which is promising for the team's future.”
Former West Indies cricketer Stacy-Ann King evaluated Gujarat Giants’ performance, suggesting that the team, led by Ashleigh Gardner, needs to achieve a strong start and contributions from the middle order to amass a defendable total.
“Reflecting on tonight’s match and their approach, I felt they were a bit too aggressive too early, particularly after losing the openers. They now have a chance to analyze their mistakes; they need to focus on building partnerships. Getting a solid start and contributions from the middle order is crucial for them,” she stated.
“They have the bowling strength, with young players stepping up effectively, but the batting remains a concern. They need to compile a respectable total to defend,” she concluded.
