Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, 4 June 2026, formally inaugurated the 1st World Yogasana Championship 2026 in Ahmedabad via video conferencing, calling the event the beginning of a new chapter for yoga as a competitive sport. The championship has drawn over 500 athletes from 78 countries, making it the largest international gathering for competitive yogasana to date.

Modi's Address: Sport, Career, and Global Ambition

Speaking to the assembled athletes and dignitaries, Modi said every living tradition evolves with time and positioned the championship as precisely such an evolution. 'Every living tradition enters new phases with time. This World Championship of Yogasana Sports marks the beginning of such a new phase,' he said.

The Prime Minister underscored the economic ecosystem that competitive sport generates. 'As Yogasana Sport expands, new possibilities associated with it will also grow. It will bring new Career Opportunities for athletes and create opportunities for trainers, sports scientists, researchers, and Event Managers,' Modi said. He also urged participating athletes to serve as ambassadors for the Ministry of Ayush's 'Yoga Three Sixty Five' campaign, encouraging year-round participation in the practice across their home countries.

Addressing all competitors, Modi said the significance of the event transcended individual results. 'No matter who wins this competition, by becoming a part of this important chapter of history, all of you have already become Champions,' he said. He further expressed confidence that yogasana would eventually earn a place in major international sporting events.

Government's Vision: Commonwealth Games 2030 and Olympics 2036

Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya described the championship as a historic milestone for India and the global yoga community. He set out an explicit roadmap: 'When India hosts the Commonwealth Games in 2030 and the Olympics in 2036, our ambition is to see Yogasana become part of these global sporting events,' he said.

Mandaviya also highlighted that India is leading the transformation of yogasana from a wellness practice into a structured competitive discipline, with this first edition serving as proof of international appetite for the sport.

Opening Ceremony and Participating Nations

The inauguration was also attended by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Gujarat Minister of State Harsh Sanghavi, and Swami Ramdev, President of World Yogasana, alongside other dignitaries. Nations represented at the championship include Uganda, Zambia, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Kenya, Japan, Oman, Mauritius, and the Netherlands, among over 60 participating countries.

The championship is part of a broader Indian push to codify and internationalise yogasana under a competitive framework. Notably, the event arrives just ahead of International Yoga Day on 21 June, amplifying its symbolic weight.
