Navi Mumbai, Jan 11 (NationPress) Mumbai Indians all-rounder Nicola Carey has made a remarkable impact in her debut season of the Women’s Premier League, stepping into the playing XI due to Hayley Matthews’ injury and showcasing composed, match-winning skills with both bat and ball.

In her initial two matches for the franchise, Carey contributed significantly at number five, adeptly managing her bowling during the powerplay. She has claimed five wickets and accumulated 61 runs across these outings. Reflecting on her unexpected opportunity and the learning journey within the WPL after her standout performance against the Delhi Capitals, she shared her insights.

Recognizing that her inclusion was a result of Matthews’ absence, Carey stated during the post-match press conference that she had a realistic view of her role in the squad.

“It would be fair to say that I wouldn’t have started had Hayley been fit. I’ve been fortunate to find my way into the team, albeit due to Hayley’s injury. She’s on the mend, and it would be great to see her back,” Carey mentioned, also noting how Amelia Kerr had to modify her position in the batting order during Matthews’ absence.

Discussing her mindset as a backup player, Carey emphasized that her preparation didn’t waver despite the unpredictability.

“Looking at the other overseas players in this lineup, they are world-class. I was aware of my standing. I just focused on how I would approach a game. Last-minute changes happen, and that’s part of these competitions,” she explained.

Carey expressed her enthusiasm for the WPL environment, commending the vibrant atmosphere and the chance to learn alongside top-tier players. “The crowd has been incredible. It’s been exhilarating. Playing with athletes like Harmanpreet Kaur and observing their approach has been fantastic. You’re constantly learning, adapting to different conditions with diverse players and coaches,” she remarked.

Reflecting on her progress since her previous match, she noted that she made minor adjustments after a challenging start. “I had to focus more on bowling into the wicket. You learn from each game, and I was fortunate to take insights from the last one,” she articulated.

Carey praised Mumbai Indians captain Harmanpreet, describing her as calm, grounded, and an exceptional leader.

“She remains very cool, calm, and collected. She understands her responsibilities and accomplishes them. She doesn’t act like a celebrity among the team and is very approachable,” Carey stated.
