New Delhi, June 27 (NationPress) The thrill and fervor surrounding the India-Pakistan cricket encounter is truly unparalleled for fans and athletes alike, stemming from the intense historical rivalry that exists between these two nations. Indian captain Rohit Sharma has participated in numerous such contests and he acknowledged that the atmosphere leading up to these games is extraordinary.
Reflecting on the T20 World Cup 2024 battle between the two sides, Rohit mentioned that the pre-match vibe felt like a festival, beginning from their hotel and continuing right to the stadium. India clinched the match by six runs in a nail-biting low-scoring encounter, with Jasprit Bumrah earning the Player of the Match honors for his impressive figures of 3-14.
"Before the India vs Pakistan game, we were warned of a potential threat - something was unfolding. Thus, two days prior to the match, we were restricted from leaving the hotel. The atmosphere began to build from there. We were ordering in meals, and the hotel was so crowded that it was difficult to move. Fans, media - everyone was present. That’s when it hits you that this isn't just another match - something significant is about to unfold.
"As we approached the stadium, it felt like a celebration already - Indian fans and Pakistani fans, all dancing and relishing the moment. I've played in so many India–Pakistan matches that I've lost track - but that pre-match energy, that sensation… It's consistently something else. Nothing compares to it," Rohit shared on JioHotstar’s special 'Champions Waali Feeling Phir Se'.
During the match, India faced early setbacks with Virat Kohli (4), Rohit (13), and Axar Patel (20) falling quickly. However, Rishabh Pant stepped up with a crucial 42 off 31 balls, including six fours, helping the team reach a respectable total of 119 as no other middle-order batsman managed to score in double figures.
Praising Pant’s performance, Rohit noted that the wicketkeeper-batter played to his strengths and kept the innings alive on a challenging pitch.
“We simply wanted Rishabh to be himself - to do what he excels at, unsettle the bowlers, and play freely. He executed that beautifully. His innings of 42 was phenomenal, especially on that surface, akin to scoring 70. It was a challenging pitch - something was happening all the time.
"The par score there was likely around 130 or 140. We finished with 119. Our objective wasn’t to aim for 200 - we were targeting 140. However, we lost wickets along the way. That’s when Rishabh’s vital knock of over 40 came in, which really stabilized things. Ultimately, we managed 119 - and I genuinely felt it could still be a competitive score. Perhaps 10–15 runs short, but I was confident that if we took 2–3 early wickets with the new ball, that 119 would feel like 160," Rohit stated.
The opening batsman also commended the pace duo of Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh for their outstanding efforts in defending the total, emphasizing their significance in the shortest format of the game.
“With Bumrah, you need to be strategic in how you deploy him. He’s a wicket-taker, and simultaneously, he doesn’t leak runs. So, the challenge is how to balance that, especially when the opposition is chasing at a run-a-ball pace? Arshdeep has been remarkable as well. Over the past two years, there’s a reason he’s emerged as India’s leading wicket-taker in T20Is — he’s an incredibly astute bowler.
"So, with both of them, my focus was on how to utilize their remaining overs wisely. You consider which batters are coming in and how they would fare against Arshdeep and Bumrah. On that pitch, it was tough for new batsmen to settle, so our aim was to bring new players to the crease. That was the strategy," Rohit concluded.
