O'Keefe: India Aims for Victory, Not a Draw in MCG Showdown

Melbourne, Dec 29 (NationPress) With the stage set for a thrilling conclusion to the Boxing Day Test match between India and Australia, former Australian all-rounder Steve O'Keefe remarked that India is unlikely to aim for a draw and will instead push for victory in the important fourth Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on the last day of the match.

India's bowling attack, led by Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, effectively dismantled the Australian top and middle order. However, the home team fought back thanks to notable contributions from Marnus Labuschagne (70) and Pat Cummins (41).

Tailenders Nathan Lyon (41 not out) and Scott Boland (10 not out) managed to extend Australia’s lead to 333 runs by the end of play on Sunday. This duo will continue on Day 5, having already established a 55-run partnership for the last wicket.

In order to win the Boxing Day Test, India will need to achieve the largest successful run chase in a fourth innings at the MCG on Monday following an exhilarating Day 4.

"I don't think India will be batting for a draw tomorrow; I believe they will go out there and strive for victory on Day 5," stated Steve O'Keefe during an interview with SEN Cricket, commenting on India's mindset prior to the crucial run chase.

The record for the highest successful fourth innings score to win a Test match at the MCG is held by England, who achieved 332/7 against Australia back in 1928.

The ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy series is currently tied at 1-1, as both teams vie for a spot in the World Test Championship final, which is scheduled to take place at Lord's in June 2025.

Australia is well-placed to secure a top-two finish and will also embark on a tour to Sri Lanka next year for two additional Tests, enabling them to potentially end the series with India at 2-2 while remaining in contention for a final berth.

On the flip side, India must secure a win in this ongoing and final Test against Australia to guarantee their qualification. Any other result would leave their chances dependent on outcomes from other matches to reach the final at Lord's.

Currently, Australia is positioned second (58.89 PCT), while India sits third (55.88 PCT), with top-ranked South Africa (63.33) playing against Pakistan in Centurion.
