Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Yushan, March 20 (NationPress) Iconic seven-time world champion Ronnie O'Sullivan has once again etched his name in snooker history by achieving an astonishing break of 153 during his quarter-final match against Ryan Day at the World Open. The 50-year-old English legend set this remarkable record in the first frame of their encounter. Known as 'The Rocket', O'Sullivan holds the record for a perfect 147 break, a feat he has accomplished 17 times previously.
On that memorable Friday, he capitalized on a free ball and included 14 black balls along with two pink ones, culminating in a total of 153 after potting all colors, just shy of the maximum possible break of 155.
“I just want to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who reached out to congratulate me on the 153,” O'Sullivan shared in a video on X. “It was an incredible moment, and I’m truly grateful for all the support.”
Prior to this, the only break surpassing 147 had been a 148 made by Jamie Burnett during the 2004 UK Championship qualifying rounds. O'Sullivan’s phenomenal achievement not only sets a new standard but also qualifies him for the £5,000 high break prize.
Next up, O'Sullivan will take on Wu Yize from China in the semifinals after Yize's impressive 5-1 victory over Northern Ireland's Mark Allen.
This season, the seven-time champion became only the second player in snooker history to score two maximum 147 breaks in one match, accomplishing this in the semi-finals of the Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters against Chris Wakelin. He followed in the footsteps of Jackson Page, who also achieved two maximums during the 2025 World Championship qualifying.
O'Sullivan has recently embarked on a journey to refine his game, aiming to reclaim his peak performance before the end of his illustrious career. Earlier, he acknowledged that his ultimate goal in snooker remains to secure a historic eighth World Championship.
