New Delhi, June 9 (NationPress) Tim Paine, the former captain of the Australia Test team, expresses confidence that Australia’s enhanced batting capabilities and overall team depth will secure them a win against South Africa in the forthcoming ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final, scheduled to take place at Lord’s from June 11-15.
Australia triumphed in the 2023 WTC final by defeating India at The Oval, with remarkable centuries from Steve Smith and Travis Head. The side, led by Pat Cummins, is set to defend their title against South Africa, who are making their inaugural appearance in the finals at the iconic venue.
“Both teams possess formidable pace attacks, and they are exceptionally strong. Expect some impressive air speed and ball movement, especially with the Dukes ball. The team that successfully manages the opposition's pace will emerge victorious, and I believe Australia has a more robust batting line-up, giving them the edge,” stated Paine during an interview on SEN Radio.
Throughout the 2023-25 World Test Championship cycle, Australia secured victories in four out of six series, ending up second in the standings, just behind the top-ranked South Africa. Paine anticipates that Sam Konstas will be left out, as he expects Cummins & Co. to field Marnus Labuschagne as the opener alongside Usman Khawaja.
“I believe Marnus will take the opening position; I think Sammy Konstas will likely miss out since it’s a one-off Test, essentially a Grand Final. Had it been a series, Konstas would have been given more time, but Marnus will take the opener spot next week.”
“Cam Green is expected to join the squad, having shown excellent form with Gloucestershire, scoring three centuries in his last four outings. I anticipate he will bat at number three, which will place Steve Smith at four, Head at five, Beau Webster at six, with Alex Carey and Josh Hazlewood returning now that he’s fit.”
“So the formidable trio from NSW, Cummins, Starc, and Hazlewood, will combine with Nathan Lyon. This is how I foresee our line-up, and I genuinely believe the Australians have what it takes to clinch back-to-back World Test Championships, which would be a remarkable milestone for this team,” Paine concluded.
