Rawalpindi, Nov 13 (NationPress) Pakistan has been fined 20 percent of their match fee due to a slow over-rate against Sri Lanka during the first ODI held in Rawalpindi on Tuesday. The penalty was enforced by Ali Naqvi from the ICC Panel of Match Referees after the team, led by Shaheen Afridi, was found to be four overs short of the target, even after considering time allowances.
According to Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, players incur a five percent fine of their match fee for each over that their team fails to bowl in the designated time, as stated by the ICC.
The on-field umpires Alex Wharf and Asif Yaqoob, along with third umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid and fourth umpire Rashid Riaz, issued the charge.
Pakistan's captain, Shaheen Afridi, accepted the proposed sanction, eliminating the need for a formal hearing.
In an exciting contest, Salman Agha's unbeaten 105 and Haris Rauf's impressive four-wicket haul led Pakistan to a thrilling six-run victory over Sri Lanka in the opening ODI. With support from Hussain Talat’s 62 and Mohammad Nawaz’s brisk 36 not out, Pakistan set a total of 299 for 5. Despite Wanindu Hasaranga's spirited 59 off 52 balls, Sri Lanka's chase stumbled as Pakistan held their composure for a successful start to the series.
Salman Agha earned the title of Player of the Match for his standout 105 off 87 balls, which included nine fours. “I focused on staying present and playing according to the ball’s merit. The partnership with Hussain was crucial and helped us recover from a challenging position. We aimed to accelerate the scoring rate as the innings progressed,” he shared during the post-match presentation.
The upcoming second ODI between Pakistan and Sri Lanka is scheduled to take place in Rawalpindi on Friday.
