London, Aug 4 (NationPress) The English football club Tottenham Hotspur has officially confirmed the signing of Portuguese international midfielder Joao Palhinha on loan from the Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich on Monday.
The north-London side revealed on their official website that the loan deal includes an option to make the transfer permanent at the conclusion of the 2025-26 season.
The 30-year-old player is making his return to London just one year after moving to Bayern from Fulham, where he made an impressive 79 appearances and scored eight goals over two seasons.
This strong performance led to his transfer to Bayern last summer for a fee exceeding 50 million euros; however, injuries hindered his performance, limiting him to just 17 league appearances and 26 across all competitions, as reported by Xinhua.
This development comes as a vital morale booster for Spurs, who recently faced the loss of midfielder James Maddison due to a recurrence of his knee injury during a pre-season friendly against Newcastle United in Seoul on Sunday.
The 28-year-old had only been on the field for 11 minutes when he sustained the injury to his right knee during the 1-1 draw against Newcastle. He was seen in distress before being carried off the pitch.
After the match, Spurs coach Thomas Frank expressed concern, stating that Maddison had likely re-injured the same knee that caused him to miss six games at the end of the prior season. "James Maddison's injury looks bad. It was a brutal moment," Frank stated.
The coach also compared Maddison's injury to the emotional farewell given to Son Heung-Min by fans in Korea, as he announced his departure from Tottenham after a decade.
"In life and football, some moments are both beautiful and brutal; today we witnessed that. Maddison's severe injury contrasted with the incredible scenes for Son, receiving respect from both teammates and the Newcastle players," he added.
