IPL 2026 Qualifier 1: Patidar says RCB go in to attack, not defend
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Rajat Patidar, captain of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), has made his team's intent clear ahead of Qualifier 1 against Gujarat Titans on Tuesday in Dharamshala — RCB are not playing to protect a lead, they are playing to seize one. Patidar believes the side that executes its plans with greater composure under pressure will book a direct ticket to the IPL 2026 final.
The Mindset Going Into Qualifier 1
The two franchises split their league-stage meetings evenly this season. RCB won the first encounter by five wickets at home, while Gujarat Titans responded with a four-wicket victory in the reverse fixture. With the stakes raised to their highest, Patidar stressed the value of nerve and clarity over tactical novelty.
'Both teams have done really well throughout the season. On the given day, whichever team executes their plans better, plays better cricket and stays calmer under pressure, I think that team will win the match,' Patidar said. 'It's a big stage, Qualifier 1. We must hold our nerves and be confident in whatever we are doing.'
Bowling Powerplay as RCB's Defining Weapon
Patidar identified RCB's bowling unit as the cornerstone of their campaign and was unambiguous about the approach his side will take with the ball. 'Our strength is bowling and the way we bowl in the powerplay will be very crucial,' he said. 'Everyone in the team knows that we are not here to defend, we are here with the mindset of attacking and we will look for early wickets. That is what Bhuvi, Hazlewood and Rasikh have been doing and we hope to continue in the same process.'
Bhuvneshwar Kumar, the season's leading wicket-taker, has been a particularly influential figure — both on the field and in the dressing room. Patidar praised his ability to mentor younger bowlers. 'The way he talks to the junior players, especially the bowlers, makes his presence in the team very important,' the captain said. 'In the IPL, it is difficult for bowlers and sometimes you get hit, but what matters is how confident you are and how much clarity you have about your role.'
Venkatesh Iyer's Form and Flexibility in Focus
Patidar reserved notable praise for Venkatesh Iyer, who has contributed scores of 73* and 44 in his last two outings. The captain highlighted both Iyer's adaptability across batting positions and the work ethic he demonstrated even when out of the playing XI.
'I know Venky from childhood and the way he presents himself is extraordinary. The way he plays in any given situation and his flexibility in the batting order, I really like his attitude,' Patidar said. 'He was preparing himself even when he wasn't getting opportunities. The work he put in during nets and the way he communicated showed he was ready, and as soon as he got the opportunity, he cashed in.'
Patidar on Leading RCB and Drawing From Experience Around Him
Reflecting on his captaincy this season, Patidar described his approach as one built on calm instinct and leaning heavily on the wealth of experience within the squad. 'To be honest, I don't need to do so much extra,' he said. 'Our management, coaching staff and senior players have a lot of experience and that is helping me a lot as a leader.'
He specifically credited input from Virat Kohli, Devdutt Padikkal, Jitesh Sharma, Josh Hazlewood, and Tim David. 'Their ideas and experiences help me a lot and I try to communicate as much as possible. My strength is calmness and the way I back my instincts,' Patidar added.
With a place in the final on the line, RCB will be looking to their powerplay bowling and Iyer's in-form bat to carry the momentum that has defined their IPL 2026 campaign.
