Permod Kohli, Former Sikkim High Court Judge, Takes Charge as New Returning Officer for IGU Elections
New Delhi, Dec 3 (NationPress) Permod Kohli, the former Chief Justice of the Sikkim High Court, has been appointed as the Returning Officer (RO) for the Indian Golf Union (IGU) elections, which are set to take place on December 15.
The current governing council, overseen by President Brijinder Singh, is nearing the end of its term, prompting the election of new office bearers for the 2024-2026 period.
The decision to appoint a new RO follows the resignation of Justice O P Garg, a former judge of the Allahabad High Court.
"In accordance with the powers granted to me under the National Sports Development Code of 2011 and with approval from the majority of the Governing Council of the Indian Golf Union, I have appointed Justice (Retd) Permod Kohli as the Returning Officer to oversee the IGU elections on December 15, 2024." said IGU President Brijinder Singh in an official communication to all State Golf Associations (SGAs).
The new election timeline and additional guidelines will be communicated to all relevant parties by the Returning Officer, Justice (Retd) Permod Kohli, in due time.
As per the revised election timeline, all eligible SGAs must submit their nominations by December 6. Following this, the new RO will review the candidates and provide a final list of those contesting by December 10. SGAs will have the option to withdraw any candidates until December 10, after which the elections will occur on December 15, with results announced on the same day, as stated in a release from the IGU.
Recently, there was significant turmoil when Justice Garg reversed his decision within 24 hours after suspending five State Golf Associations (SGAs)—Himachal Pradesh Proam Golf Association, Arunachal Pradesh Golf Association, Madhya Pradesh Golf Association, Nagaland Golf Association, and Sikkim State Golf Association—for non-compliance with IGU byelaws on November 25. These five suspended SGAs will not be permitted to participate in the election process.
