New Delhi, Feb 23 (NationPress) Shaun Pollock, the former captain of South Africa, shared his insights on India's defeat to the Proteas during the Super 8 stage, noting that the host nation struggled to adjust to the playing conditions in Ahmedabad and overlooked the significant "new ball challenge" with the seam movement.

South Africa ended India's impressive 12-match unbeaten run at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, delivering a 76-run defeat to the defending champions at the Narendra Modi Stadium this past Sunday.

Initially, India seemed to be in control, thanks to a remarkable opening performance by Jasprit Bumrah, who finished with figures of 2-7. However, South Africa mounted a strong comeback, highlighted by a 97-run partnership off just 51 balls between David Miller and Dewald Brevis. A late surge from Tristan Stubbs, who scored an unbeaten 44 off 24 balls, propelled South Africa beyond the 180-run mark.

“India failed to adapt effectively to the Ahmedabad conditions. South Africa had previously played three matches here, giving them valuable insights. While they initially faced challenges losing Quinton de Kock, Aiden Markram, and Ryan Rickelton early on, they continued to adjust to the conditions. The partnership between Brevis and Miller turned things around for them,” Pollock stated.

“Tristan Stubbs showcased his batting prowess towards the end, aiding South Africa in reaching a total of 187 runs. Had India approached their chase with more caution at the start, the outcome could have been different,” he added.

During their chase, India struggled significantly in the first six overs, finding themselves at a precarious 31/3 after the powerplay. South Africa effectively contained the aggressive Indian batting lineup, leading to India being all out for 111 runs in just 18.5 overs.

“The initial overs were particularly challenging as the ball was not coming onto the bat smoothly. Instead of playing it safe, they aggressively attacked the bowlers from the outset. This is not a viable strategy on such pitches when chasing a substantial total. Losing two early wickets put them under immediate pressure. Smartness and patience are crucial in such scenarios. India failed to recognize that the new ball would pose a significant challenge due to the seam movement,” Pollock concluded.

To remain in the semi-final contention, the defending champions must secure victories in their upcoming matches against Zimbabwe and the West Indies, especially with their net run rate now standing at -3.8.

Point of View
