New Delhi, Feb 23 (NationPress) Following India's disheartening 76-run loss to South Africa in their Super Eights match at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, legendary former cricketer Sunil Gavaskar pointed out a distinct strategic disparity between the two squads. He noted that the Proteas exhibited a level of adaptability that India failed to demonstrate.

South Africa, led by David Miller's 63 runs off 35 balls and Dewald Brevis’ 45, managed to bounce back from 20/3 to set a total of 187/7. In stark contrast, India was dismissed for just 111 in 18.5 overs, in front of a crowd of 90,954. The South African bowlers, particularly Marco Jansen with 4-22 and Keshav Maharaj with 3-24, effectively dismantled India's batting order, which failed to gain traction after being reduced to 51/5 within the first 10 overs.

Reflecting on the match, Gavaskar emphasized the way Miller and Brevis rebuilt their innings on a tricky black soil pitch, where the ball did not come onto the bat easily.

“If you observe how Dewald Brevis and David Miller reconstructed the South African innings, they played numerous shots in the ‘V’, particularly when faced with short deliveries. They adapted commendably, recognizing that the ball wasn’t behaving as expected on the pitch,” Gavaskar commented during his analysis on Star Sports after the match.

His comments highlighted India's hasty batting approach, with several key players falling to reckless shots instead of stabilizing their innings in response to early challenges. Ishan Kishan was dismissed attempting an extravagant slog, Tilak Varma succumbed to excessive bounce, and Abhishek Sharma’s brief resistance ended with a top edge, as South Africa's bowlers took full advantage of the conditions.

In contrast, Miller, drawing from his experience with the Gujarat Titans in the IPL, played his innings with precision, finding boundaries through traditional strokeplay before accelerating. Brevis backed him up with calculated aggression as their 97-run partnership stabilized the innings after the initial setbacks caused by Jasprit Bumrah (3-15) and Arshdeep Singh (2-28).

The defeat marked the end of India's 12-match winning streak in T20 World Cups and was their first loss in an ICC World Cup match since the 2023 ODI World Cup final at the same venue. With their net run rate falling to -3.8, the defending champions now face a crucial must-win scenario in their upcoming Super Eights matches against West Indies and Zimbabwe to maintain hopes of reaching the semi-finals.

Point of View

It is evident that India's batting strategy fell short against South Africa's disciplined approach. The contrasting performances underline the need for adaptability in high-stakes matches, an area where India struggled significantly.
