Bengaluru, Sep 23 (NationPress) The two-time Olympic medallist from the USA, David Lee, returns to the Prime Volleyball League (PVL) as the coach of the Bengaluru Torpedoes. After a few successful years with the team, he is determined to secure the coveted title following their runner-up finish in Season 2.
When discussing the team's aspirations, Lee, who was recently honored with induction into the USA Volleyball Hall of Fame, stated, "Our aim is clear, 100 percent, and that is to win. This has been our goal every year. Although we've faced challenges in achieving this, I can confidently say that this season's team is stronger than last year’s."
He elaborated, “The league is always unpredictable, with numerous foreign and Indian players moving around. While it's tough to pinpoint the best team, on paper, the Bengaluru Torpedoes certainly rank among the top three, keeping us in the title chase.
The Bengaluru Torpedoes have established one of the longest pre-season training camps. Now entering their third week of rigorous practice, the coach is pleased with the squad's development behind the scenes.
The 43-year-old, who clinched a gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and a bronze at the 2016 Rio Olympics, has a clear vision for his team. He expressed, “I believe the team is approaching the desired level. We are still navigating some intricate systems that might be challenging for the newcomers, but overall, we're in an excellent position.”
Lee further mentioned, “We have two friendly matches scheduled this week, which will provide valuable insight into our current standing. Given our extended training camp compared to others, I feel we are in a promising position.”
During his time with the team, Lee has observed significant growth in players like Sethu and Mujeeb, and he anticipates an impressive performance from the Indian players once again.
“Sethu has consistently been the top server for the past two seasons, and Mujeeb has gained valuable experience over the last two years, particularly during his time in the national camp. Moreover, we have a group of young and talented players making their debut in the RR Kabel Prime Volleyball League powered by Scapia. I foresee a bright future for them,” he noted.
The strategy for the Bengaluru Torpedoes is well-defined, and the team is committed to their pursuit of success in Season 4. Addressing the league's evolution, Lee remarked, “It's a tremendous advantage for the sport and Indian players to receive coaching from foreign experts and to observe how international players train and compete. This influence is reflected in the performance of the Indian national team. Each season, I witness the league improving, which is both exciting and promising.”
