Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Noida, Feb 2 (NationPress) The Pro Wrestling League (PWL) is poised for an exciting expansion, as plans are underway to introduce the Greco-Roman style in upcoming editions of the competition. Chairman and Promoter Dayaan Farooqui confirmed that conversations are already in progress to broaden the league’s format and integrate additional features that can elevate its global presence.
This announcement follows the successful conclusion of the PWL 2026 season, where the Haryana Thunders triumphed over the Delhi Dangal Warriors with a nail-biting score of 5-4 in the final match. The finale saw a full house, highlighting the league's increasing popularity and the strong bond wrestling shares with Indian fans.
Farooqui elaborated on the league’s future plans, indicating that Greco-Roman wrestling could soon become a key component of PWL, alongside freestyle matches.
“Moving forward, we will consider the introduction of Greco-Roman wrestling, featuring two bouts in that style and the rest in freestyle. This is merely the beginning. Starting February 2, we will explore how to incorporate more elements into the league. We have already announced our upcoming gaming app for the Pro Wrestling League, marking just the start of our journey to expand further,” Farooqui stated in an interview with IANS.
He stressed that the league's vision extends beyond the competition mat. With plans for a dedicated gaming app, PWL aims to enhance fan engagement and develop a sustainable ecosystem around the sport.
Reflecting on fan feedback, Farooqui expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support, particularly after a six-year break. “The joy on fans' faces is our true victory, showcasing their enthusiasm and passion. Wrestling is a sport deeply rooted in our nation and has consistently brought us Olympic medals. The response has been incredibly positive, and today’s sold-out final proves how far we’ve come. Such support fuels our ambition to grow the Pro Wrestling League,” he said.
The league's successful revival has also attracted attention from the international wrestling community, with representatives from United World Wrestling (UWW) present at the event, expressing a desire for deeper collaboration.
“The feedback from UWW representatives was very encouraging. They expressed interest in sending more of their wrestlers to compete in India for excellent exposure. It's a matter of pride for us that their foreign athletes would benefit from participating here. Our goal has been to provide Indian wrestlers with exposure, and we look forward to their participation in even more prestigious international tournaments in the future.”
