Dubai, Sep 29 (NationPress) Pakistan cricketing icon Wasim Akram voiced his dissatisfaction with the team's display in the Asia Cup final and didn't hold back in his critique of pacer Haris Rauf, labeling him a "run machine as a bowler" following his poor outing against India.
India secured their third win over their long-time rivals, Pakistan, in the Asia Cup, triumphing in the final on Sunday to capture their ninth title, with Rauf being one of the bowlers heavily targeted.
Rauf, who attracted attention for his controversial actions, allowed 50 runs in just 3.5 overs, including the final runs by Rinku Singh, sealing India's victory.
In an interview with the official broadcasters post-match, Akram sharply criticized Rauf for his ongoing difficulties against India.
"He's unfortunately a run machine as a bowler, particularly against India. I'm not the only one criticizing him; the entire nation is. He doesn't participate in red-ball cricket, so he isn't likely to improve. If he refuses to play, we don't want a player on our team who avoids red-ball cricket. At minimum, he should play four or five first-class matches," Akram stated on Sony Sports.
He further emphasized that the absence of red-ball cricket exposure has hindered Rauf's ability to handle pressure effectively.
"His control is lacking because he doesn't engage in red-ball cricket. The PCB must reconsider; if you're not going to play red-ball cricket, thank you very much.
"To enhance your bowling length, and regarding his run-up—it's not the smoothest. I spoke to Waqar (Younis) and asked why he hasn't improved his run-up in the last four or five years. Waqar mentioned that it's due to his lack of participation in red-ball cricket," Akram added.
Tilak Varma shone brightly under immense pressure, scoring an unbeaten 69 and leading India to a five-wicket victory over Pakistan, thus securing the Asia Cup for the ninth time.
