New Delhi, March 2 (NationPress) After India’s talented batter Virat Kohli silenced his critics regarding his form with a match-winning Champions Trophy century against Pakistan, former West Indies World Cup-winning captain Vivian Richards disclosed the one quality of Kohli’s game he would have loved to incorporate if he were playing in the modern era.
Kohli is approaching his 300th ODI on Sunday, marking yet another milestone for the Indian batting sensation after he eclipsed former batting icon Sachin Tendulkar's record as the first player to achieve 51 centuries in the 50-over format.
He secured his 51st ODI century against Pakistan in the second group stage match of the Champions Trophy last week, assisting India in clinching a spot in the semi-finals of the tournament. The 36-year-old right-hander, who debuted for India in 2008 against Sri Lanka, also became only the third batter in ODI history to amass over 14,000 runs, joining the ranks of cricket legends Tendulkar and Kumar Sangakkara.
"His energy, I believe, is crucial... along with his passion. These are the traits that I hold dear. When you possess a team that you can defend, I think we all share that particular quality," stated International Masters League Governing Council Member and West Indies icon Sir Vivian Richards during a virtual press conference.
"Just the energy, witnessing him on the boundary... he’s positioned far away, and there’s an appeal for leg before, and he’s vociferously appealing as well... it illustrates his constant involvement in the game. His passion is evident. There isn’t a moment on that field that Virat Kohli overlooks. He’s simply magnificent in that regard," he further commented.
Kohli is no stranger to setting records in the ODI format. At the 2023 ODI World Cup in India, he achieved the all-time record for most runs in a single edition of the tournament, amassing an impressive 765 runs from 11 matches, which included three centuries and six half-centuries.
