Brazilian forward Rodriguinho marked his first start for SC Delhi with a stunning five-goal performance as the club demolished Defenders FC 7-0 in the Durand Cup at Ranchi on 9 August, sending SC Delhi to the top of Group C with maximum points from two matches. The result placed them within touching distance of the knockout stages of Asia's oldest football tournament.

A Debut for the Record Books

Rodriguinho needed just 13 minutes to complete his hat-trick on his starting debut, adding two more goals after the interval — including a curling effort from the edge of the box. His opening goal came after he controlled a pass on his chest, spun away from his marker, and calmly placed a left-footed finish into the bottom corner. The second followed barely a minute later, and the third arrived before the match had settled into its rhythm.

Despite the individual brilliance on display, Rodriguinho was quick to deflect credit. 'This is the result of the belief that everybody had in the team,' he said after the final whistle. 'I would like to thank all the coaching staff for their teachings and support.'

Why Rodriguinho Chose India

The Brazilian arrived at SC Delhi without the marquee profile of some of his countrymen who have previously played in the Indian Super League, yet his decision to move was a considered one. 'In Brazil, we are always keeping an eye on the Asian market,' he explained. 'India has been growing more and more, with more and more players coming here. There are also a lot of Brazilian players with big names who have played in India. So, we had some knowledge about Indian football, and I believed in the Delhi project. I was happy that they believed in me.'

That mutual belief has already begun to look justified after just one starting appearance.

Settling In Off the Pitch

Rodriguinho's adaptation to life in India has been aided by the warmth of those around him. 'I am getting along very well with the people here,' he said. 'They are very open and talkative. They are very curious. They want to learn and they want to listen. I am having a great time with them.' There have been adjustments — including to the food — but the forward appears increasingly comfortable in his new surroundings, a comfort that has translated directly onto the pitch.

The Player He Models Himself On

Rodriguinho sees his own profile as similar to that of Brazilian international Matheus Cunha, citing the Wolverhampton Wanderers forward's versatility as a source of inspiration. 'He can play in different positions in the front. He can play as the only striker and he can also play between the lines. I get a lot of inspiration from him because he is a very versatile player,' he said. When asked to describe himself in a single word, Rodriguinho kept it characteristically direct: 'I am someone who finishes actions.'

What Comes Next for SC Delhi

SC Delhi's 7-0 victory has firmly established them as Group C frontrunners, and a place in the Durand Cup knockout stages now appears a formality if form holds. For Rodriguinho, the five-goal debut is merely an opening chapter. 'I am a simple person. I like to always be smiling and to have good energy,' he said — a personality as straightforward as his finishing. The belief came first; the goals, emphatically, have followed.
