New Delhi, Oct 26 (NationPress) Former Indian chief selector MSK Prasad has voiced his optimism regarding the enduring contributions of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to the Indian cricket team, asserting that this experienced pair will be invaluable assets for the Men in Blue at the 2027 ODI World Cup.
The batting legends showcased their prowess, delivering a powerful performance that led India to a decisive nine-wicket victory in the third ODI against Australia, thus avoiding a series whitewash.
Rohit Sharma scored an impressive 121 not out, building on his prior success in Adelaide and achieving his 33rd ODI century. He now ranks third for the most centuries in ODIs, trailing only Virat Kohli (51) and Sachin Tendulkar (49).
On the other hand, Kohli, who faced a tough start with two consecutive ducks in the initial ODIs, bounced back with a crucial unbeaten 74. This performance elevated him above Kumar Sangakkara to become the second-highest run-scorer in Men's ODI history, amassing 14,255 runs from 305 matches, only behind Sachin Tendulkar.
"I am extremely pleased—I was eagerly anticipating their performances in the last two matches. Although it didn't occur as hoped, I'm thrilled it finally did, and it's crucial. As we approach the World Cup, their contributions are essential. Players like Virat and Rohit Sharma will prove to be significant assets for the team," Prasad commented to IANS.
"I don't see people evaluating them based on their current form. Considering their past achievements, Rohit has improved his fitness, and Virat remains in top form. Questioning their capabilities is perplexing! Together they have accumulated 83 or 84 centuries, so testing them seems surprising to me," he added.
Rohit and Kohli, who retired from Test cricket earlier this year, also announced their retirement from T20 Internationals after India's T20 World Cup triumph, alongside star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja.
Prasad commended the trio for transitioning smoothly to the next generation at an opportune moment. "Rohit, Virat, and Jadeja: one commendable aspect is their timely handover to emerging players following their T20 World Cup victory. This has been a remarkable development, leading to these young talents flourishing and establishing themselves. We have a very strong team," he remarked.
Prasad also emphasized India's profound talent in the shortest format, noting that even skilled players like Shreyas Iyer have struggled to secure a spot in the squad, highlighting the depth of the current talent pool.
"Indeed, we have numerous players ready to step up. Shreyas has yet to find a position in the T20 squad, reflecting the wealth of talent at our disposal. It's debatable whether he should be included, but I believe he deserves a place. Regardless, our T20 squad is packed with firepower and is well-structured," concluded the former chief selector.
