Vadodara, Jan 11 (NationPress) India’s dynamic batsman Rohit Sharma made headlines on Sunday as he became the opener with the highest number of sixes in ODI cricket history. This remarkable achievement occurred during the first match of the current ODI series against New Zealand at the Baroda Cricket Association Stadium.
While aiming for a target of 301 runs, Rohit kicked off the innings alongside captain Shubman Gill. After a cautious beginning, the 38-year-old cricketer launched his first six in the sixth over against Ben Foulkes. He maintained his aggressive approach in the subsequent over, sending Kyle Jamieson’s delivery soaring into the stands. This performance also marked Rohit’s achievement of 650 sixes in international cricket, making him the first-ever player to reach this milestone.
Despite his promising start, Rohit couldn't convert it into a substantial score, getting dismissed in the ninth over off a delivery from Jamieson, ending with 26 runs from 29 balls, including three fours and two sixes.
With his latest performance, Rohit has now hit 329 sixes as an ODI opener, overtaking the legendary Chris Gayle, who has 328 sixes to his credit. Last year, Rohit had already set a new record for the most sixes in ODI cricket, surpassing Shahid Afridi during the series against South Africa.
Rohit was in exceptional form last year as well, scoring 650 runs across 14 ODI innings with a top score of 121 not out. He currently holds the top position in the ICC rankings.
In the match, after winning the toss, India opted to field first. New Zealand made a strong start, with openers Devon Conway and Henry Nicholls establishing a solid foundation. Their partnership of over 100 runs put the Indian bowlers under considerable pressure.
Nevertheless, India responded effectively as the innings progressed, tightening their bowling and taking crucial wickets to regain control. New Zealand lost momentum as India claimed regular wickets in the middle overs, preventing them from maximizing their strong start. Despite a valiant effort from Daryl Mitchell, who played a pivotal role in stabilizing the innings, the visitors managed to score 300 runs for eight wickets in their 50 overs.
