St. John’s (Antigua), May 17 (NationPress) Cricket West Indies (CWI) has appointed Roston Chase as the new captain of the West Indies Test team for the forthcoming home series against Australia in June. Jomel Warrican has been named as the vice-captain.
This series will mark the beginning of the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle for both nations.
According to a statement from CWI, "The decisions were unanimously endorsed by the CWI Board of Directors during a meeting on May 16, 2025."
"This announcement comes on the heels of a thorough, innovative, and structured evaluation process to identify and recommend the next captain and vice-captain for the West Indies Test squad.
"CWI recognizes the vital importance of leadership in shaping team culture, enhancing performance, and ensuring sustainable success. Thus, a data-driven, multi-faceted approach was adopted for the selection process. This represents a significant shift in how leadership roles are filled, focusing on accountability, transparency, and alignment with contemporary cricketing standards," the statement added.
The 33-year-old will take over from Kraigg Brathwaite, who resigned from the captaincy in March.
The selection process commenced with a shortlist of candidates chosen based on criteria such as Test experience, leadership skills, and captaincy credentials. The candidates included: John Campbell, Tevin Imlach, Joshua Da Silva, Justin Greaves, Roston Chase, and Jomel Warrican, according to CWI.
Chase has participated in 49 Test matches, scoring 2,265 runs at an average of 26.33, including five centuries. As a bowler, he has claimed 85 wickets, with impressive figures of 8 for 60 against England in Bridgetown in 2019.
Shai Hope, the current ODI and T20I captain, declined the opportunity to focus on his existing leadership positions, as stated by the Caribbean board.
Head coach Daren Sammy expressed his strong endorsement for the new captain.
“I wholeheartedly support this decision. Our new captain has gained the respect of his teammates, understands the responsibilities of this role, and has demonstrated the leadership qualities necessary to advance our team. I encourage fans throughout the region to support him - we’re creating something remarkable,” he said.
