Rutaja Dadaso Pisal: A Rising Star in Indian Women's Hockey
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Hyderabad, March 6 (NationPress) At only 23 years old, Rutaja Dadaso Pisal has made a name for herself as a key player in the senior Indian women's hockey team. She has been selected for the squad participating in the upcoming FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 Qualifiers in Hyderabad, Telangana, scheduled from March 8 to 14.
Originating from Phaltan, a quaint village in the Satara district of Maharashtra, Rutaja's entry into the world of hockey was somewhat serendipitous. “Prior to hockey, we enjoyed playing Kho Kho at school, which is quite popular in Maharashtra. Our teachers recognized our running abilities and stamina, urging us to transition to hockey. Thus, my journey commenced,” she recounted.
“I began my hockey journey at the age of 12, where I had to undergo a fitness and endurance assessment to join my academy in Pune. I succeeded in that test, marking the start of my hockey career,” she elaborated.
In a village where female athletes were rare, Rutaja acknowledged the support that propelled her forward during her formative years. “In my village, it wasn't typical for girls to participate in hockey. Families were hesitant to let their children engage in sports, but a coach from our community encouraged us to pursue our dreams,” she shared. Her dedication led her through state and national tournaments to the junior team, where she played a crucial role in India's victory at the Women's Junior Asia Cup in 2023, earning her place in the senior camp.
Having been a part of the senior national camp for more than two years, Rutaja feels that the experience has significantly enhanced her skills. “While there are many similarities between junior and senior camps, the training intensity with senior athletes is much greater. My time in the camp has contributed immensely to my development,” she explained.
Although she primarily plays in the midfield, her strategic movements within the circle pose a constant scoring threat, with seven goals to her name in 20 appearances for the senior team. This success is bolstered by her prior experience as a forward.
“Currently, I’m positioned as a midfielder, but I used to play as a forward. Depending on team dynamics, we often need to adjust and contribute wherever required,” she stated.
Discussing the team's objectives, Rutaja highlighted the significance of the upcoming competitions. “Our primary aim is to qualify for the FIH Hockey World Cup. Beyond that, our ultimate aspiration is to excel at the LA Olympics. We are determined to qualify for every significant tournament and perform to the best of our abilities,” she confidently expressed.
On a personal level, she mentioned, “My strengths lie in scoring goals and creating penalty corners, so I am focusing on refining these skills. Additionally, I am working on improving my ball recovery and dribbling speed. I must push myself further and support my teammates in challenging situations to enhance our collective performance.”
