Hyderabad, March 4 (NationPress) As the Indian Women’s Hockey Team gears up for the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 Qualifiers in Hyderabad, Telangana, 24-year-old midfielder Baljeet Kaur is excited to make a significant contribution towards India's quest for World Cup qualification.
"Our primary objective is to win and secure a spot in the World Cup. We aim to deliver outstanding performances and strive to bring home a medal for our nation," Baljeet expressed.
Baljeet believes that the current squad is well-equipped to achieve remarkable results. "The team comprises numerous young, dynamic players, creating an excellent synergy. The team has good camaraderie and impressive fitness levels," she remarked.
Reflecting on the team’s preparations, Baljeet shared, "The training camp was productive, with various sessions focusing on enhancing our skills, including shooting, and overall, we made significant progress."
She highlighted her personal focus areas leading up to the tournament. "Before joining the camp, I prioritized improving my fitness, dedicating considerable effort during the training phase," Baljeet added.
Her hockey journey began over a decade ago in her hometown of Kaka Kandiala, Punjab, when she was in seventh grade. What started as curiosity quickly blossomed into a deep passion for the sport. "I began playing hockey in 2012 after being inspired by my uncle’s daughter, who frequently practiced early in the morning. Her commitment sparked my interest in joining her," Baljeet reminisced.
Driven by her enthusiasm for hockey, Baljeet moved to a school in Tarn Taran that offered better training and competitive opportunities. Her talent was evident, leading to her selection for the Junior National Camp in 2017, marking a pivotal moment in her career.
However, the path was not without challenges. Growing up in a modest environment, she often faced difficulties accessing necessary equipment and resources early on. "Playing hockey was challenging due to financial constraints in my family. Our community played a vital role in supporting us by providing sticks and shoes. My siblings and I are incredibly grateful for their assistance during those formative years," she explained.
Baljeet made her senior Indian team debut in 2022, acknowledging that her journey has had its share of highs and lows. "Since 2022, I have experienced fluctuations in my inclusion in the team. My sole focus is on continuous improvement and representing India – that is my unwavering objective," she stated.
Known for her aggressive and fast-paced playing style, Baljeet attributes these qualities to her inherent nature. "I would describe myself as an aggressive and swift player. I feel a surge of motivation when I see others excel, prompting me to push my limits as well," she shared.
Despite facing skepticism from villagers who advised her to prioritize academics, Baljeet remained steadfast in her hockey ambitions. "People often suggested I should stop playing and concentrate on my studies, but my family ultimately stood by me, and their support has been invaluable," she added.
The Indian team will kick off the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 Qualifiers in Hyderabad on March 8, facing Uruguay, followed by matches against Scotland on March 9 and Wales on March 11.
